Miami at Home on Senior Day to take on the Hapless Akron Zips-Game Notes and Game Thread

I will bump this tomorrow morning. Women play at Millett on Saturday for a 1pm tipoff on ESPN+. Miami is 23-5 overall, 14-1 in MAC play. Ranked 10th in the current mid major poll. The RedHawks will honor three seniors prior to the start of the game: Amber Scalia, Ashton Elley and Clara Gonzalez Planella-all of whom have only been on the team one year, but all have made major contributions to the team’s success this year. Amber Scalia is sitting at 1,496 career points and 198 career three pointers. When she reaches 1,500 career points, Miami will be one of 34 schools nationally with an active 1,500-point scorer in men’s (Peter Suder) and women’s basketball.

The 23 wins this season rank second-best in program history, one away from the program record (24), set by the 1981-82 team.

Miami has four players averaging double-digits, led by Amber Tretter (14.6 ppg.). She is joined by Amber Scalia (14.0 ppg.), Ilse de Vries (12.9 ppg.) and Tamar Singer (10.8 ppg.). Miami is currently third in the MAC in scoring (71.2) and first in defense (58.4), which results in a 12.8 point margin of victory, second-best in the conference. TheRedHawks are second in the MAC in field goal percentage (45.0%), first in three-point percentage (35.0%) and second in free throw percentage (76.2%). Miami is first in turnover margin (4.9), third in assists (16.3) and third in steals (10.8).

Miami beat Akron at Akron on Jan. 10, 2026, 79-56. Zips will be receiving another beat down tomorrow. The Zips are 7-21 overall and 4-11 in conference play, currently 10th in the MAC standings. Ni’rah Clark leads the way in scoring (12.2 ppg.), while Keiryn McGuff is tops in rebounding (6.4 rpg.).After Clark, Zips have nothing offensively.

Miami notes:

Tamar Singer currently ranks 4th nationally at 7.3 assists per game. There are only 5 girls in the entire country with 200 or more assists. Tamar is 4th with 204, and already holds the Miami single season record by 29. The other 4 who have 200 or more assists are all from power conferences.

Timeout Miami 8 Akron 7

Nice run out of the timeout.

16-12 Miami at the end of the first quarter. Akron finished with a 5-0 run. Scalia struggling from the field. Singer with 5 points to lead the team. Taylor also with 5 off the bench. Singer no assists as team is struggling a bit to hit shots we normally hit off the pass.

Akron timeout. Miami 26 Akron 15. Singer with 8 Taylor a real spark off the bench with 7. Singer with 3 steals. Taylor with 2 steals.

37-21 Miami at the half. Singer with 10. Taylor with 9. Miami D has been smothering. Offensively out of sync for Miami and could have better shot selection.

Akron making a little run. Miami missing open shots and layups. 45-33 Miami. Miami could easily be up 20. Amber Scalia now has 1500 career points giving Miami the only combined MBB and WBB teams with 1500 point scorers.

54-39 Miami headed to 4th quarter. Ended with not the starters all on the court, and it showed a bit. Need to bring starters back at least to start the 4th. My guess is Glenn still isn’t overly pleased with some of the shot selection. Also we have missed about 5 layups/bunnies. We can get away with that against Akron but not UMASS or Ball State.

70-45 Miami at under 5 timeout. Likely have seen the last of Singer, Scalia, Devries as Miami going to the bench. Scalia has 13. Points off turnovers Miami 26 Akron 0.

74-56 Miami final. Jurjo 15 Taylor 13 Scalia 13 Singer 12. Miami didn’t play a starter the last 5 minutes. Miami moves to 24-5 overall and 15-1 MAC play!
