Peter Suder - 1st Team
Kam Craft - 3rd Team
Brant Byers - Freshman of the Year & All-Freshman
No Elmer is a fucking travesty.
Cool with everything else.
Congrats to Pete and Brant. Much deserved.
I get the MAC is deep but I’m a little stunned the 2nd team in the MAC didn’t get more guys in. Oh well. I hope it fuels them to go far.
Kam was a bit too inconsistent but he definitely showed 2nd (and sometimes 1st) team potential. Nothing for Elmer is craaaaaaazy.
Brant is the man.
It also doesn’t help how deep of a team we are. Play a lot of guys and it can be a different guy every night. Similar thing happened with MSU this year. Won the big ten and I think had one guy on the third team and that was it.
EDIT: they actually had two 3rd teamers but the point still stands
I thought Elmer would get at worst 3rd team plus a spot on the all-defensive team.
Wonder if @JiveHawk could get us a ranking of the best MAC defenders, based on those metrics he would post throughout the season.
Miami had a first team All-MAC selection every year from 03-04 to 11-12 (9 seasons).
That was the last time Miami had a first teamer.
Been a long winding road…
In case people want to live that nostalgia:
11-12: Mavunga
10-11: Mavunga
09-10: Hayes
08-09: Bramos
07-08: Pollitz
06-07: Pollitz
05-06: Hatcher
04-05: Mason and Horace
03-04: Johnson
Been a long time since we had a “guy” like those names. Pete definitely belongs.
“MVP” Metric
Best Defenders
Elmer is such a gross miss. The numbers say he’s 1st team all mac and he didn’t even get honorable mention? Skaljac a big miss as well. Woolfolk might be a surprise to some.
Thanks Jive. Elmer didn’t have huge numbers in any stat, but he showed up in rankings of almost ALL of them. Anyone watching Miami games knows how invaluable (see the indispensable column) he was.
Yes I am a bit surprised about Woolfolk grading so well, with the analysis having him by far the best defender in the MAC. Although he was excellent in MAC play, outside of a game or two.
That’s great context. Much appreciated.
Yes…Elmer should have received at least an HM.
Sucks for Elmer that he didn’t get the recognition, but in this day and age it feels like accolades just serve to draw attention from the vultures.
I realize that Groce has Akron rolling but I’m disappointed that Steele didn’t get COY given how big of a leap we took this year. He can certainly take home the ultimate prize this week and we’ll be more than content without it.
Elmer not getting either second or third team is a joke. He is a stat sheet stuffer and our best or second best defender. Craft had a solid season but Elmer is light years more impactful on both ends. Suder definitely a 1st team guy. Steele should have won COY in a landslide. Byers rightfully won FOY and it really shouldn’t be close. Ipsaro could be mentioned as a 6th Man of Year. Skaljac should have absolutely been on freshmen team. In every traditional and analytical statistical breakdown he was a top four freshman overall and was second best guard behind Sharron Young at Akron. @JiveHawk can you provide all the analytic stats for just freshmen that played 10+ minutes per game for the whole season (not just MAC games)?
Obviously Steele did an amazing job and would have been a deserving winner, but when was the last time a team only had 1 loss in the MAC? I honestly can’t think of one any time recent. Hard to grumble too much about Groce.
for sure i get it. at same time Akron has been a premier program for years in MAC and was expected to be a top 1-2 team. Miami has been a doormat for 17 years and was picked 6th pre-season. Matter of expectations.
I believe the last team to go 17-1 was the 01-02 Kent St team that made the elite 8.
Who votes on the post-season awards?
And that Kent team (which held on against a big Miami rally at Millett on Senior Day) would have gone to the Final Four had Indiana not hit 80% from beyond the arc.
