Regardless, it’s good to know what the current maket is. I recall reading that Fannin at BG was paid “six figures” to play this season, and that was doubted by some. But now, it looks like that was likely accurate.

And it isn’t going to get any easier with UMass joining the MAC.

@LaxDaddy Heres Reggie’s roster page. It looks to me like he has two years left.

@Redsea Nice summary.

Another item brought up was a possible cap on NIL. CM said he thinks that will eventually come into being as the arms race spirals out of control. It might take a few years. He thinks the cap on the big boys could be about $20 million and considerably less for G5 programs.

In the meantime, CM feels we need to have our NIL up to par with other MAC schools. Asked about what it would take to realistically get us to a point where we compete with Boise for a slot in the CFP, he pointed to three schools with lots of money to spend - Boise, Memphis (FedEx $) and Liberty. He doesn’t think we can compete with those three for NIL dollar levrls but could eventually be in the next tier down.

The question of attendance came up. There are several strategies being implemented to boost student attendance. One was the move of the student tailgate section permanently down to near the Cradle of Coaches Plaza. They pointed to the UC and OU games when a high level of student attendance electrified the game day atmosphere and said student attendance is the key to making the in-stadium game day experience exciting…

They also pointed to a survey about what makes people attend a Miami home game. The result showed it is both a convenient block of time plus an interesting opponent. They pointed to UNLV coming in next season as a positive in that area.

I was on the call they definitely didn’t do much of a security check, I didn’t even actually sign up I was just sent the link by someone else on the call (I wasn’t sure if I could make it), also they ended the call mentioning everything was confidential you’d think they’d mention it earlier

Appears the program’s attitude and actions line up with the mantra of “yeah this sucks but we’ll make the best of it,” which is what you would hope for. Someone has to win the MAC every year, even if we’re not on the same planet as some of the quasi-pro programs out there we can still be a winning program that finds ways to reload with the portal and keep the culture intact as possible. I don’t dream about going 8-5 with the Arizona Bowl at night but there are much worse fates out there.

I hear the claims that this is unsustainable and I totally agree, but the notion that some entity, someday, is going to put a cap on the amount of money that can be paid to a college athlete seems ridiculous under the current judicial precedent that no governing body (such as the NCAA which was sued and lost over this) has the right to limit the earnings potential of an individual. Hypothetically, if every college in the country simultaneously said, “Okay, this has gone on far enough and we’re just going to agree to draw a line in the sand where we won’t allow our athletes to accept money OVER such-and-such an amount…” it would be deemed collusion and smacked down immediately. No, I fear this horse has left the barn. College athletes will hereafter be paid whatever the market permits. And as long as there are deep-pocketed donors who want to buy themselves a championship there is just no way to stem the tide of NIL toward ever-higher payouts for the professional athletes who also happen to attend college. So what is unsustainable? Amateur status. Anything that looks like parity in the world of college athletics. As the 2024 edition of the RedHawks concludes, who will Miami rent to play for them next season? Sorry for the cynicism, but that’s all I got left.

Thought it was interesting that Decker said the Arizona bowl people actually asked the school’s collectives for money when he was anticipating getting offered something by them :joy:

We should join The Ivy League. Excellent hoops and hockey plus people still show up at their football games and oddly enough, some of their players still get drafted. Problem solved!!!

We were once proclaimed to be “a Public Ivy.”

Will be making more than the coaches he’s played for this year. One year rental could go there and be another Gage or Rashad and go bust. With that he’ll have a nice pay day it seems and zero NFL chances to pursue his dream. Stay and he’ll be the #1 target and get plenty of chances to shine.

Exactly! Time to just claim the spot.

Even if transferring to a P5 school guaranteed that someone wouldn’t make the NFL, for the NIL numbers being tossed around and the probability of making the NFL, it’s probably positive EV to transfer.

Of course, someone still can transfer and make the NFL, so it seems like a pretty straightforward decision.

@HawksVox Yet somehow some of the professional leagues have managed to implement salary caps for their teams. Maybe it’s because you limit what the team can spend, not what the individual can make. You could have a $20 million NIL cap and could pay it all to one player or spread it out over 85 or over 105 or just 15 if you want.

That’s because a salary cap has been collectively bargained by the unions representing those sports/players. With no union to represent college athletes, I don’t see how a salary cap is possible.

I think one thing that would be fair to say is the stats of the guys that left last year

  • Nicholson tried 7 FGs
  • Woullard averaged 14 plays a game
  • Gage had 12 catches
  • Amos hardly played

I didnt verify but those stats showed you better get paid to make it worth your while

My information and experience is from circa 2007-08, but I recall the university development function making it exceptionally difficult to attempt athletic specific fundraising. I know that that administration has turned over but I fear something has to be “carved out” to get the current admin more supportive.

Secondly, the NIL can’t dilute the Miami Athletic Fund fundraising. Maybe a carve out to the fund helps. When I knew it as the R&W club, I think the annual amount raised was just north of $1M.

The collective needs some “market maker” expertise (volunteers) as they attempt to generate revenue from sources the University can’t. Creative deal making is critical. I suspect those ideas will come to light over the next year.

Also, I don’t think this all has to be monetary. Player wants to have their family attend games - e.g. have our frequent traveler alumni base donate air miles, etc.

Also its harder for college sports because the teams aren’t actually paying the money it’s the collectives, it’s practically treated as sponsorships which of course no professional league has limited

It seemed like the NIL and athletic department are working well together since both were represented on the call and talked in a consistent manner

You may be right about challenges with the university as a whole

The HC and ADs office were always connected at the hip. The disconnect occurred as you moved south down Tallawanda Road towards Roudebush.

And, their “athletes” actually go to class in Ivy!
