Really informative, so farā¦ Reggie Vergilās contract offer I think is $400-950,000. Forgot the exact number.
Pardon my ignorance. Are the figures you are citing for Mr. Virgil coming from Coach Martinās zoom meeting?
Yes
So how many others were on that call because I thought it was very eye opening on the current state of play.
I was on the call. At the conclusion, we were advised to be discreet in sharing a lot of the specifics related to personnel and specific potential donors. The call was enlightening to say the least. Many of us have been a bit naiave about how wild the west truly is.
One example of general information we can share is that kids are getting unsolicited contracts sent yo them by other programs with large amounts of NIL money when they haven evfn indicated they are interested in going into the portal.
That validates some of the accusations Mack Brown made last year about the price of a starting P4 QB. He said back then that Drake Maye had received offer sheets for $2 million to play his senior year when he wasnāt even in the portal.
Lots of folks said he was exaggerating. Apparently not. It seems the cost of a starting P4 QB this season is actually about $2 million a year.
Any comments about last Saturdayās Hindenburg reenactment?
Yes there were comments about it. But nothing like the team had the flu or half the guys didnt want to play or I was interviewing all week - just the normal we got beat
So help me understand this: if that school in Texas has an NIL of 22 million, then that one year fee makes him of of their top 22 players. Without playing one down. That seems oddā¦
Redsea and Blues were both on, too. I donāt know about anyone else.
Yes I was on back to back Zoomās. Menās BB and then Martin. And as mentioned above, Kyle Decker, who was on both, asked for discretion about what is discussed publicly about these Zooms. Remember you can read MHT without being logged on. I will say FB Zoom was quite interesting. I will make this offer. If you have questions and are someone I recognize as a long standing member of these boards (Iāve been around since their inception) feel free to private message me and I will try to respond as best I can. And now I am getting ready to head to Oxford.
I posted the RV $$$ figure on here before he made that disclosure about not repeating dollar amounts so Iāll refrain from mentioning anything else. Probably could have waited before hopping on here, but that really was an eye opening number.
I think @JiveHawk should edit those posts with dollar figures attached since Coach requested not to share that information. This is a public board that anyone can see.
I think I deleted anything that had a dollar figure on it, but if I missed something that gives away too much info, flag it for me and Iāll take care of it.
I didnāt attend the football call, but I was on the basketball call with Kyle. I donāt think anything was a surprise. IU has a top 15 NIL budget and is suddenly in the playoff.
To some extent, I wonder how some of the SEC keeps up. Every SEC school has 1000 grads with car dealerships that throw money at the athletic programs, but does that compete with the Big 10 schools who can claim a lot of top end wealth? Do 1000 car dealers match a single Les Wexner? Or Mark Cuban at IU? ESPN is trying to decide who is part of the club and who isnāt, but they inadvertently gave away control to donors when pushing to get kids paid. None of this was discussed on either call, but it is interesting that as soon as paying players becomes legal, the SEC loses its thunder.
I left those calls with mixed emotions
On the positive side
- Both coaches are extremely positive about making this work- there was no whining - just this is the way college sports are
- I am glad we are trying and it seems like we have big goals and are making some progress
- While we are being lapped by the big boys - it seems like we are optimistic we could get to the top of our conference
- The amount of coaches and admins on both calls is really amazing.
On the negative side
- I shouldnt be even invited to these type of calls- i am a nobody and not multi-generational wealthy- I get anxious about that
- Best case is we raise enough money to remain a competitive G5- mid majorā¦. We have no chance on retaining top players- the money difference is just too great. I wouldnt even try to convince my son to turn down the Reggie Virgil offer
- I could see some momentum in the early stages but what happens in the future. Like we need this level or more every year
In our not so wonderful world of NIL and portal-portal-portal is there any ideas out there that might work as proposed by member schools to bring reality back into the picture?
Or is it just āit is what it isā and nothing will ever happen until the the two Biggie conferences split to form their own club and leave the rest of us out in the wilderness?
Thatās when we form our own club and make our own rules that we can hopefully all live by. Create our own playoffs and tv deals etc.
I didnāt attend the zoom - was there any verification of identity beyond just registering with an email? Requesting confidentiality for a public call seems silly.
If this was supposed to be confidential than perhaps our coach shouldnāt have a big mouth.
Thinking about it, I get the impression that he wanted it leaked, but added the disclaimer for cover. Have your cake and eat it too, so to speak.
I think they were trying to be honest with potential donors but respectful to the players that it isnt their news to share
You guys are making this too negative.
I might find out the salary of a friend or co- worker. I wouldnt put it on facebook
