MACtion-College Basketball's Most Surprising Undefeated Team-Sports Illustrated

Nice piece on Miami from Dan Gartland released about 45 minutes ago:

Depends on who you listen to or watch, but Lunardi seems to think that if we go undefeated in the regular season, we will get an at large berth should we falter in the MAC semis or finals. There is some discussion that we might be able to still get a bid with one regular season loss and a loss in the MAC finals, but that is more like 50/50 at best.

I would think an undefeated 31-0 regular session gets us in regardless of what we do in Cleveland. That shouldn’t even be a discussion. You don’t leave out a 31-1 team; I don’t care what their SOS is. One regular season loss and a loss on Friday or Saturday in Cleveland should at least have us on the bubble, but who knows.

There is zero chance the committee, even as cynical and big team protective as they are, would leave out a 1 loss team who was undefeated and ranked until the final weekend. It won’t happen. At the least we’d be in Dayton to earn our spot, but I actually think we get a regular 11.

I still think we are fine as a 2 loss team too, especially if that loss is Q3. We’d definitely be in the Dayton play in game but totally fine with being able to prove it on the court.

If we lose two in the regular season though, we must take care of business in Cleveland.

I heard a stat that no team has ever been excluded from the field of 68 with 4 or fewer losses. I dont think we can have 4 but I think that is a neat stat

2003-04 Utah State was 25-3 (17-1 conference reg season) and left out, but that was probably field of 64.

Stew Morrill didn’t win many beauty pageants.
