In 2023, a Miami buddy and I fished at Great Bear Lake, NWT. The lake is the fourth largest fresh water lake in N America. Look at a map of Canada and in the far northwest there are two very large lakes. Great Slave Lake is the smaller of the two. Great Bear is NW of Great Slave and about 2,000 miles from Detroit.
I had read about fishing there when I was a kid. Dave and I were lucky to get in 2023 to the Plummer’s GBL lodge. The lake is cold and clean. The season for fishing is late June to late August. The ice closes up early and as much as 8’ thick. I spoke to the business mgr yesterday and she indicated that there will still be ice “chunks” when we get there on July 5. The fishing was, well, catching. We caught dozens of lake trout and arctic grayling daily! While not beautiful scenery, the granite islands are especially unique. Not much vegetation. The lake is only open to about 300 fisherman a year because of the ice. Fish were anywhere from 2-37 lbs. I caught the 37 lb, 47", in a real battle.
While an expensive trip, it is definitely a bucket list trip. Dave and I leave in two weeks when we fly to Yellowknife, the capital of the NWT. Population about 22,000. Then, a two hour flight to GBL. If you love to fish or just travel in a unique environment, GBL is, well, great.

Oh–THAT NWT. Right now my mind is focused on NWT Canada. A great trip! Leave in 13 days. History will have to wait until I return.

In your defense, NWT Canada just recently became the 51st state. U.S. NWT happened a long time ago.
