Georgia State women at Miami at 1:00 Saturday on ESPN+

This is our home game in the MAC/Sunbelt Challenge. By coincidence our men are also playing Georgia State ( on the road and at 2:00). Georgia State is a fairly recent D1 program and we have never played them before in either men or women. We have two common opponents, We both lost at Louisiana Monroe by similar scores and won by similar scores against Western Michigan. Georgia State is 14-8 (8-4) and on a 3 game winning streak. They average 72ppg and get 9 steals per game, plus their 3 double digit scorers are all smaller guards, ranging from 5-3 to 5-7, Which makes me think they like to press and run. They also seem to play their bench a lot.

They do have 6-1 and a 6-0 starters so they have some size to go with their speed and quickness.Their three starting guards average from 10 to 14 ppg.

Miami is 5-16 ( 3-8). We do play better at home. Freshman Amber Tretter now has 4 straight double doubles and since Jan 27 has averaged18.5/12/0, raising her season averages to 10/6. Our other starters are 6-1 GS twins Jada and Jaydyn Scott and quick guards Hennessey Luu-Brown and Cori Lard. Of note, former starters Katey Richason and Lakresha Edwards were not wearing their “boots”, which should mean they will be back playing soon. I would think we need to handle any possible pressure and make it a half court game, execute our offense and hit the boards hard. In a half court game, we are difficult to score on as we are fast and have some size and are working hard on defense and our staff comes up with good game plans to stop the opponents.

Georgia State has actually been playing D1 hoops since 1976 - originally in the Sun Belt, subsequently in the CAA and then back to the Sun Belt in 2013. Their football program is more recent, having been started in 2010. They’ve always played football in the Sun Belt.

RedHawks up 62-41 after three.

Miami up 76-58 with 4 minutes to play. Amber Tretter continues her double double parade, so far today with 16 points, 12 boards. Jadyn Scott has 27 points and 10 boards, Lard with 14, Brown with 10.

80-63 Miami Final. Yay us!

Jaydyn Scott, who has been in a long slump exploded in the second half ( I think she had 4 at halftime) and scored 27 point with 10 rebounds. AmberTretter extended her double double streak. She scored 8 points early and they changed their defensive strategy against her and she only got 8 more, but that extra attention to her opened things up for everybody else, especially Jaydyn and Cori Lard.

Jaydyn Scott with 27/10, Amber Tretter 16-12, Cori Lard 14/8 assists, Hennessey Luu-Brown 10 points. We outrebounded them 41-30 and despite the fact that they pressed full court for 4 quarters, we had 15 to’s to their 18. Our 5 starters all played from 34 to 37 minutes.

Trivia. In the two games we played vs the Sunbelt, Jaydyn Scott had the two highest scoring games of her 5 year career, averaging an even 25ppg vs the Sunbelt.

Just very, very impressed with what the new staff has done. I know it’s a long shot but maybe we will reach double digit wins. That would be a great thing first year.
