I’m actually shocked Sorsby and his legal team had the audacity to fight for eligiblity knowing that it would come out he bet on IU 40+ times, including betting on QB under passing yards and the game total under. Even as a bench player, that’s worse than anything even Pete Rose did. Its betting against your team and teammates.
I get the argument that even betting on your team sometimes like Rose basically sends a message the times you don’t bet and is also inexcusable, but Sorsby explicitly bet against his team. I previously thought he had to be done for college but maybe an NFL team gives him a shot, but betting against your team really does make me lean towards he should be permanently banned from the sport.
The betting for your team not being that bad has never really stuck with me. You still have insider knowledge (injuries and other news) and unless you are betting for your team every single game, you chose when to bet on your team and therefore can choose games not to bet on your team. Also it would be like saying insider trading isn’t bad if insiders only use knowledge to buy stocks not sell
He won’t be in the supp draft, he’ll be playing college football next year and then entering the normal draft.
It seems crazy a few months ago the NCAA was debating and going back and forth on whether players should be able to sportsbet on pro sports or not and a random court in Texas can just drop a bomb that betting against your own team is a-ok.
If the NCAA can’t remove a guy for betting on games he’s on the field for, how can they enforce any rules? That seems the most basic responsiblity of a league.
Or knew he’d never be reelected if he ruled against TT. One has to wonder too if he was concerned about some football obsessed Texas redneck coming after him with a shootin’ iron.

That said, it seems to me that Texas Tech is playing with fire here if they don’t cut Sorby loose. What’s keeping Tech’s opponents from filing suit in a different court claiming that Tech has an ineligible player on the roster resulting in Tech having to vacate any wins in games that Sorby played?
If I’m TTU, and have a guy who has bet on the games, how do I know that he’s STILL not betting on the game? Prop bet: TTU QB throws for 3+ TDs. (“And boy, after getting two easy TDs, he sure has been inaccurate! Looks like coach is just gonna RUN the ball for the rest of the 2nd half!”)
Sorsby’s legal team did a good job. Texas Tech sits in Lubbock County. They filed their case in Texas state court in Lubbock County. To think this judge is going to rule against TTU is naive. It is called picking a favorable venue.
That’s the beauty of the injunction game. You file in a friendly venue, get the friendly judge to issue an immediate temporary injunction while the trial is scheduled, then have the judge schedule the trial for a year later after the season, so you don’t even need to win the trial. The case won’t even go anywhere as it will be dropped as soon as the season is over.
I read the appeal to this injunction would go to an Amarillo court, and based on typical scheduling, the appeal to the injunction wouldn’t even likely be heard until February which is after the season.
Its a joke. You don’t need any merits beyond the bare minimum for an injunction to get you through the season.
There are no rules. Texas Tech is pumping millions of oil money into their roster (including Adam Trick), they’re not gonna take the moral high ground when their prize QB is on the line. What a disgrace, I don’t dislike TTU but I really hope they bomb this season as karma for supporting a precedent that fundamentally stains the game.
I don’t know if it would even be a “moral high ground” stance. More like self-preservation. How can you trust that a bad interception is a mistake and not him having the under? After all, this is a guy who bet on his own team’s games.
