Former MLB utility infielder dies

I am saddened to learn of the death of former major league utility infielder Lenny Randle yesterday at age 75.

I met Lenny when I started my experience in the Mariners Clubhouse the day after the strike ended in 1981. Lenny returned to the Ms in 1982. He was the first player I saw released during my 16 seasons in Seattle. I helped him pack his gear out to his aging Benz in the Kingdome players parking lot that day. That was to be his last day of his MLB career as he moved on to play baseball for a few years in Italy.

Lenny was a hoot!

You may remember him as the third baseman who got on his knees and blew Amos Otis’ bunt foul during a game against Kansas City in 1981.

RIP, Lenny Randle.

Blowing the bunt foul was one of my favorite things anyone has done on the field.

I think Lenny did stand-up comedy as a side-hustle.

He’s the dude who laid down a bunt, then ran over the pitcher Billy Sims-style?
