This is one reason why St. Cloud does not have or cannot afford much of a compliance department for NCAA athletics.
One has to wonder if Notre Dame might be looking for a hockey conference if the B1G can find two more conference schools to add it. I assume giving ND a harbor was a goodwill gesture with the idea of full membership being the end goal. Thatâs not happening now. ND got the playoff expansion model they wanted, and it looks like theyâll get a new NBC deal that will keep them close enough to the P2 to keep them independent for the foreseeable future. Does the B1G ultimately decide to end this little dance and tell them to take their hockey program with them?
I think Illinois was the only Big 10 school recently considering creating a hockey program. They abandoned that exploration a couple years ago. If college athletics still was a rational environment Big 10 hockey would add Bowling Green, Western Michigan and Miami and become a 10 team easy travel league. Alas, common sense disappeared a while back.
Itâs tough out there. Along with Westernâs 27% decline over the same period, Minnesota-Duluth has seen a 13% decline since 19-20.
I can see Illinois revisiting the idea. They pulled the plug on it in the wake of COVID and before knowing how large the media windfall headed their way would be.
As for the B1G ever adding MAC schools, well letâs just say that Iâm not going to hold my breath. They wouldnât consider it today, and they wouldnât have considered it fifty years ago. I think the best the MAC schools should hope for is an annual series with their in-state B1G school.
Yep. Like I said, rational decisions have gone by the wayside. They could include all three MAC schools for hockey without even offering a full share. And 50 years ago they only had 5 Big10 teams and were already in the same hockey conference all of the MAC schools were in.
The University of Illinois is done with menâs DI hockey for the foreseeable future. âA painful decisionâ: Illinois ending plans to add NCAA hockey - The Champaign Room
Nebraska-Lincoln is out due to Nebraska-Omaha. Iowa, while they have a rink, is on the record as being a hard no to move to DI. Northwestern, Indiana, and Purdue and the word âhockeyâ have never been used in the same sentence unless itâs âNorthwestern, Indiana, and Purdue will never field a DI hockey program.â
The Domers will be a B1G hockey affiliate for quite a while.
Back to lurking.
While Indiana wonât have hockey, it was at one point actually used in the same sentence as Indiana⌠there was a legitimate arena concept created about ten years ago by JLG Architects for an Indiana Ice Arena.
BUGSâ message board is talking about a since-deleted tweet about St. Thomas to the NCHC.
The Athletic has a current article posted about the toxic culture created by Harvardâs womenâs hockey coach. The details make our recent womenâs basketball scandal pale in comparison.
Intense hazing and Naked Skates involving even alumni!
Sadly, not shocking.
Elite Prospects has Casper Nassen, a 19-year-old Swede, heading to Miami. History of scoring in Sweden, and heâs 6-feet-4.
ASU rumored to be submitting their application to join the NCHC within a few days as reported by Schlossman. Crank the speculation meter to 11!
Donât note any speculation about Miami exiting the NCHC in that articleâŚearlier reports had rumors suggesting Miami leaving for the CCHA w no exit fee when Arizona State joins.
I remember that we didnt like this because of travel but I would think Phoenix is easier to fly to than Omaha
To be clear: The Wodon story said he thought the NCHC should waive the exit fee, not that it was rumored to be happening.
Thanks for clarifying, Bonk!
Arizona State was just voted into the AAU. Does that put them on the table as either a full member or hockey affiliate for the B1G?
AAU?
Association of American Universities.
