We all understand that tampering will occur. That having been said a January 2nd -12 th portal would make it virtually impossible to play be the rules.
Most schools had resumed instruction by yesterday the 13th. A transferring athlete would have to enter the portal, be evaluated by prospective coaches, be contacted by prospective coaches, be offered, enrolled and moved in by the 12th. Gosh, i can see how a person might want to visit their prospective new home before committing as well.
This attempt to remedy the problem works for only one group, the overworked coaching staffs. It would also preclude a student from transferring at the optimal time for many which is between school years.
I think the student athletes will fight for a second portal following the end of spring practices when some learn they are not in their coaching staff’s plans for the fall start of the season.
I don’t know how this could be an unanimous vote. I guess it’s a great thing for a P4 with a big NIL. They get to coach through the postseason without disruption and then go shopping in January. (This assumes that agents and handlers wouldn’t be brokering deals prior to the window…highly unlikely). As for the G5’s and FCS coaches, why on earth would they even want an early portal? They should want the spring to build chemistry with the new team. The optimism and sense of team generated in the spring coupled with the challenge of entering a new program with just the summer to learn a system and move up in a depth chart would dissuade many from entering the portal. Less than P4 coaches should be united in a single window open in April. G5’s have the most to lose in the portal.
Just found out Koy Beasley’s dad works at my kid’s elementary school. He was excited to tell me this morning, as he had noticed my Miami gear in the past.
Funny you would mention that; when I was at Miami in the mid to late 70’s, freshman English was considered to be a very challenging course.
I remember how my frosh roommate (who was from my Cincinnati suburban high school and was a pretty decent student) struggled mightily to garner a C in freshman English. At the dining hall, it was often a discussion point of how difficult it was to achieve an A in that class. And you had to take two semesters of it.
To do so, you had to have a pretty good command of vocabulary and knowledge and capability to construct essays. Writing skills were essential.
Anyway, I still find myself listening to “student athletes” interviewed on TV and can’t help
myself muttering “this guy would never have passed freshman English at Miami.” I supposed it’s remotely possible that they write better than they form meaningful spoken words and sentences.
Somehow I tested out of freshman English and into what was then called English 15/16 as opposed to 11/12. I complained to my advisor and told him I wanted back in the basic class. He informed me I was nuts. I was guaranteed at least a C in 15/16 and even better did not have to pass whatever the competency test was called then. You only got two or three chances and if you did not pass it was go home. My first day of 15, I found myself in a class that consisted of almost all very smart students from mostly Day School type of places. The young lady next to me said they had used our text in her junior year of high school somewhere out east. I struggled but it was ,in my mind, what college should be about.
Sometime in November Coach Shrider asked if I would tutor another freshman who was taking the test for his last chance. I had to inform him I knew nothing about the test and he would have to get someone else. Must have turned out ok as the player remained eligible
BTW, I was one of the few people in the class who did not have either four years of Latin nor four years of a foreign language. A couple of them also had Greek in high school. Only about 12-15 in the class. I still hate Plato.
I think we were at Miami the same 1974-78 years. First two years we were in the quarters system and didn’t move to semesters until Junior year.
Freshman English was a bear. I first had Marilyn Throne and she was tough on me. Gave me a C minus minus and I lost it but she made me a better communicator and writer.
