It is almost unreal. A complete reversal from years gone by where the schools had to reign in overzealous boosters from converying cars and other goodies to recruits “under the table”.
Now it’s all above board! What a mess!

And Caldwell.
Blues…if I’m reading this right 68% of players that entered found a new team? Some were probably not on scholarship and possibly landed as walk on again. Some scholarship possibly counted as “committed” are now walk ons at their new school. At 70% getting picked up not as bad as I thought.
I cannot attest to the veracity of the figures. I took them directly from ONN3. Even at 70% that is about 1000 who entered the portal who did not find a landing spot.
I win the board today:
We lose a lot across the board, but what does everyone think are our greatest areas of need in the portal. I’d rank them something like this from where we need the most help to the least:
1.) WR - I mean, duh. Lose our top three and three of the best in the league. Kam Perry is our lone returner with any meaningful game experience. I know we have some young guys to be excited about, but I think we need to add a couple veteran type players to this groupl
2.) OL - Arguably an even greater area of need than WR, but I have it lower because it’s a lot harder to add offensive lineman in the portal. But finding a John Young type to help along some of our younger guys would be nice.
3.) DL - This is where it gets tough, but the losses here are pretty significant. Ugwu, Suttle, Hilton. Getting Frazier and Washington back is nice, and Adam Trick looked good in limited snaps, but we could use another edge rusher and some depth in the middle.
5.) QB - Not sure how to rank this one. 5 might be way too low or way to high. Hard to say because I don’t really know what we have in house right now, but the fact that we’re actively pursuing quarterbacks in the portal makes me think the coaches think we need to add someone.
6.) LB - Some would argue this is too low given what we lost, but we get Corban Hondru back who was effectively a starter and Chuck always seems to be able to keep the LB pipeline moving so I’m not as worried here.
7.) RB - Losing a thousand yard rusher is tough, but the combination of a hopefully healthy Kenny Tracy and Jordan Brunson and some talented young guys makes me optimistic this group will be alright. Still would like to add someone, but I don’t think we’re desperate here. We lost Amos last year and we were fine.
8.) DB - Losing Strader sucks, but if you look at it, at least as of right now, we get everyone else back (Evans, McWood, Walters, Blakey) plus some good young pieces in Tony Coleman and Mychal Yarbrough. I’m actually pretty bullish on this group.
Overall, I think with a few additions the defense could still be really good next year. The offense is where we badly need help. And again, maybe I’m nuts with these rankings, just how I see it.
I might think differently after next Saturday but I would rank it this way
Coach Martin says he likes the young receivers so that is why I dont have them on the list. I am guessing we will grab one
I hope we have the QB on the roster but it is impossible for me to know and it is by far the most important position. None of the current qbs could beat out Aveon Smith who wasnt able to make an impact at Alabama A&M or wherever he went
I’ll go:
OL - Having a great OL will allow the new QB time to make reads and not force quick decisions. Also a good rushing attack would take some pressure off the QB.
DE - I think our outstanding DEs the past few seasons have been key to the success of the defense. Being able to put pressure on the QB without blitzing helps our LBs and DBs.

Former 4-star DB. Was a true freshman last year
Beasley also very fast and good track star at La Salle where he ran the 100 yard (or is it now meter in HS?) dash. Could be a good MAC DB w that speed.
I think you can make a case for next season being almost a total rebuild. It’s not as severe as what Washington snd Ohio had to do this season and certainly not what Marshall is facing but it’s going to be a challenge.probably more like Michigan’s rebuild this season.
Everything starts with a proven QB and an experienced OL. Going into next season we don’t appear to have either.
I would hope that some of the RS Sophs and Freshmen are ready to step in and contribute as first string players. We have to continue proving we’re a developmental program that produces the likes of Virgil, Strader and Tracy every year…
Let’s play him both ways. MAC Travis Hunter!
Purdue’s highest ranked recruit since David Bell and George Karlaftis in 2019 according to 247Sports.
Offered by Georgia, USC, and many others.
Edit: It was small. And several butcher’s aprons.
I think O line is first priority. Then D line, WR, QB. I think Henry can be our guy at QB. He is a better QB than AV. AV did not “ beat him out”. Henry wasn’t ready for the keys to the bus, now he is. AV was never a true QB, which is why he slipped to 3rd string down south. That said, I would grab a QB with some experience if you can find one that’s not guaranteed start. I think Gotkowski will be the back up. Like I said from day one, I don’t expect to ever see Kopp as our QB. However, if we can’t protect the QB it doesn’t matter who is back there. I think our RB’s are solid. I think we will see a rebuild year for 2025. Might be back to 6-6 and another bowl game. CM will figure it out. He always does.
(whispering)
Would Chuck bring Aveon back? Obviously few of us would, but we don’t make that call.
