Mercifully we don’t have to deal with Mike any more

What was his handle?

It depends on the Mike.

I believe Mike was the huge Miami woman’s sports fan who was later convicted of being a creep? Hopefully I’m not mixing up bulletin board names I havent seen in 20 years and defaming someone.

I believe you are correct.

Mike was a huge women’s basketball fan, traveling all over the country to watch them. Sometimes traveled with the team. The following is public record.

Jesus.

I remember him following a lot of the women’s sports, I think primarily he was a women’s basketball fan but would see him and hear about him being at other events. Most people suspected some creepy things but I don’t think they ever had proof or enough to act on to keep him away from the teams at the time until he was arrested.

Wow! Almost a 15 year sentence…

That’s the fed charges. He’s still in Ohio corrections on his other heinous charges since 2007 and still there. This was quite the unspoken “don’t talk about” drama on MHT when I was a student (graduated in 2008). He was a very prolific hawktalker. Definitely the most active on the MHT women’s sports boards on the old site.

Jeebus.

I was at Miami during that same era, and I had a history prof named Kevin Armitage who ended up being a convicted pedophile years later. I generally liked his class, think I took 2 courses with him over my time there. He was a good teacher, so I was surprised to say the least when I saw his mugshot in the news.

When that happened, I looked him up on that website “rateyourprofessors,” and while most of the reviews were positive, I noticed there were a few from female students who talked about how he made them feel uncomfortable, and things of that nature. Complaints about not only how he could be creepy, but also touchy feely stuff. And these dated back years. I just checked it now, but it looks like his page has been pulled from the site.

Mike’s next parole hearing is March 2028. He may not be paroled but I hope Miami is proactive in banning him from campus.

Who was Mike? Any other posters from previous boards who just up and vanished for one reason or another (arrested, died, just had enough and left)? Didn’t the guy who originally start this site kind of disappear?

Plenty. Versions of MHT have been around for nearly 28 years. People cycle in and out, get busy with the rest of their lives, or for whatever reason just don’t get the same enjoyment out of it that they used to and move on.

“RedSteve” started this up in 1997 and built the first version of the message board and then a later iteration that for several years doubled as a first-gen Miami-focused sports blog. I used to spend an hour-plus per day doing roundups of news links and writing longer pieces for the front page. But it just wasn’t sustainable with my job and my family responsibilities. Steve found himself in a similar boat and faded away. Sledge and Chuck could probably tell you similar stories.

Also, and not for nothing, if you moderate a community of folks with strong opinions like this long enough, you eventually piss off everyone about something. And at that point, it’s time to take a break.

I’m glad a new generation of mods cared enough about the community to want to revitalize it, and it’s good that additional folks keep finding their way here. We should thank them frequently for taking the time to do it.

@DevilGrad – Cool. You’re one of the OG. For those of us who are FNGs, or FN(er)Gs, give us the scoop on legendary posters and the all-time most controversial/heated topics, like where the thread had to be locked, crazy sh*t like that …

Gotta be some good ones!

I think one of the all time great (I’m biased) threads was about our trip to Fairbanks to watch us play UAF. Some hilarious stuff happened and most, but not all, was documented. We also appeared live on a web cam in Fairbanks that was viewed by a whole lot of people back in Ohio.
