Please support the women’s team, we are on the way up. EMU is 1-19 (0-1). Miami is 12-8 (5-5). All time Miami leads 43-25., but Eastern has won 6 out of the last 7. We split last year.
There is a connection to Eastern. First year coach Sahar Nusseibeh was an assistant at Miami from 2019 to 2021. She got hired for a complete rebuild at Canicius, who had won a total of 5 games in the two previous years, In her second year she got 17 wins and a WNIT bid. She brought 2 former Miami players to Canicius for their 5th year. Vanessa Garrelts was the starting point guard and Tijuana Fulton was in the rotation and is now a Graduate assistant coach at EMU. Sahar brought 4 players with her, 3 of whom start, 2 former assistants as assistants and 2 former players as Graduate Assistants.
One of the Canicius transfers, 6-2 JR Sisi Eleko, has been the best big girl in the MAC.She is second in scoring at 19.1ppg and first in rebounding at 10.3 rpg. Another is their second best player, 5-5 GS Mackenzie Amalia averages 10.3ppg and is first in the MAC in minutes per game at 38. She is also 3rd in the MAC in apg at 5.3. The third Canicius transfer who starts is 6-0 JR Brooklyn Thrash.
5-5 JR Olivia Smith has 30 points in their last 2 games. 5-9 RS JR Olivia Westphal is a Duquesne transfer who has 49 3’s this season.
Miami just had the most one sided win in the 102nd game of the Ohio U series. 38 point blowout. We lead the MAC in defense, giving up 56ppg. Enjulina Gonzalez keeps getting better as she understands better how to take advantage of what other teams are giving her. As other teams put more emphasis on trying to contain her, it is giving more open shots to others. We have a lot to play for down the stretch.
This morning Toledo played at Buffalo and a new UB attendance record of over 4,700 was set. It was an Education day. The old attendance record was set a few years ago when North Carolina played a loaded Buffalo team.
Heck of a game as Toledo was up19 in the second quarter, Buffalo caught them in the third quarter, then in the final seconds Chella Watson ( who had 77 points in two games vs Toledo last year) hit a 3 tie it and after a TO to Advance
Kendall Carruthers hit a long long 3 for the win.
11 to 6 Eastern as they got off to a good start, hitting two 3’s and Eliko getting an old fashioned 3. Katie got the start at center for the first time this year as Ilse is out with illness. We will likely play half the time with only one of our post players on the court.
So we were down 16-8, now we are up 22-16 halfway through the 2nd quarter. Katie and Tamar both have two touch fouls. Cori Lard has played better than Tamar tonight
30-24 Miami at the half. We are collapsing on Eliko and stopping her, BUT they are passing it back out and hitting open 3’s. Eastern is 5 for 12 on threes, we are 1 for 10.
Amber Tretter stayed out of foul trouble for the second straight game is heading for a double double with 8 points and 5 rebounds plus guarding Eliko.
They just cancelled a postgame autograph session, so it must be icing over in Oxford now. It has been icing since 6:00 in New Bremen, That is why neither Grumpy or I are at the game.
This is more like it. Halfway through the 3rd quarter we have outscored them 15-2, so up 45-26 now. We have had quite a few layups. Tretter 12, Chandler 11, Gonzalez 7, Lard 6. Tamar has played great so far this quarter.
55-34 at the end of 3. How many she ends up with depends on when Coach takes her out. They have lost their discipline on guarding her that they had earlier in the game.
