Reminds me of a practical joke Phil Roof and Phil Reagan played on Steve Yeager when I was in Seattle. Tommy had tired of Yeager’s attitude and cut him loose. We picked him up for season. He brought his Hollywood star act into the Kingdome and it didn’t play well. On top of that he couldn’t hit his weight. Late in the season he was mostly relegated to being a bull pen catcher and he spent a lot of time in the bully with the Vulture and Roofie badmouthing Lasorda. Near the end of the season, they concocted a scheme. They had a fake telegram sent to him from Lasorda apologizing and telling Yeags how much he wanted him back. It instructed Yeager to come to Lasorda’s office as soon as he got back to LA. They had a clubhouse kid deliver it during the game to the bullpen. Yeager beamed when he read it out loud. Roofie and Vultch bit their lips. Apparently Yeager went into see Tommy in LA beaming and Tommy did an extreme WTF are you talking about. Yeager realized he’d been conned! Phill Reagan was friends with Tommy and verified that Yeager had followed through on the fake telegram. Both had one Hell if a laugh!
