Business of Sports-Ohio State Partnership with JP Morgan Chase

Nice payday for the Buckeyes, as the rich keep getting richer.

For context…

Total Miami Football expenses for 2025. $11 million

Total Men’s BB expenses $2.9 million

Surely Miami could get a Bruno’s Pizza, Skipper’s Pub, or Brick Street patch for their athletic jerseys for a cool $100,000.

Bottom line, business want to associate with teams that will be seen, to maximize their advertising dollars. OSU gets seen. A lot.

How about AK Steel for the defense: “they’ll lock you out.”

AK Steel no longer exists.

Nor does Armco.

Cliffs now operates Middletown Works.

How about a Cintas or Starbucks patch for Miami. Cintas seems perfect - local and a uniform company.

Interesting. F1 still calls their steel barriers Armco barriers.

In other news, B10/SEC negotiating on language in the Protect College Sports Act. Current numbers being exchanged include $20M to retain your own players and another $21.3 rev-share cap, plus another $5M credit for female athletes. So $46M a year. No idea how this affects other conferences besides these 2.

Deloitte would be awesome.

How about Starbucks?

So now, instead of the NCAA screwing over most of College Sports, its the NCAA AND Federal Government…makes sense.

Armco has not made a steel barrier or guard rail in 40 years.

That business was divested in 1986.

Armco ceased to exist as a legal entity in 1999.

It is a testament to the original brand like Kleenex.

A good portion of the world refers to guard rails as Armco barriers to this day.

And Shaker Run was a wonderful golf course when built for Armco. It’s now in terrible shape with too many condos on the course.

I played there last year (I believe). The rough was very rough. The Armco par 3/4 course is next to it.

Not sure which is more disappointing, the houses along the course or the lousy conditions. I’d hoped only the “new” 9 would get houses. Was such a treat to play there, so serene and beautiful, you forgot what state you were in.

Not to be outdone, Notre Dame inks a similar deal with SoFi. 6 years, $18-20 million a year. The gap between the haves, Big 10/SEC/Notre Dame, and have nots, has never been wider.

Putting the Ohio State ($17M) and ND ($18M+) patch deals in context: NBA teams average $10M/year off jersey patch deals

The mill in Zanesville still has Armco painted on the outside. They can pry the name from my cold dead hands!

Other schools that will be donning brand logos when college football season starts next month include Arkansas (Tyson Foods), Wisconsin (Culver’s), and LSU (Woodside Energy).

Penn State could be the next major university to form a brand partnership, with Pennsylvania-based Utz and Hershey
