Buffalo Week

He may not be…Bolden been playing sort of hybrid FB, looks like the Bjorson kid fits that bill, had to look it up.

Wonder if Trey LaBounty (sp?) will make an appearance at some point?

I was wondering that, too. I don’t think he’s gotten any playing time yet. I think he might be the only player in Miami history from the State of Washington.

Both Bjorson and LaBounty were listed as participating in the Northwestern game.

In fact, Bjorson is listed as playing in 2 games thus far and LaBounty in 3 games.

Could be principally ST but I did see Bjorson lined up a few times in the 4th quarter as a TE last week.

Jerry,

I was a big fan of your play at Miami and have a lot of respect for your posts over the years. I wish we had more former players posting. A really big fan of women’s basketball and the play of your wife also. I did have an issue with the fairness of the way you used your statistics in that post, and from your posts it seems like you are angry with Chuck and wanted to make him look bad. That accounts for my tone in that post.

So should we continue the UC series? I really like having UC come to Oxford 3 times by 2029. So no way I would cancel it now. Let’s wait and see how it goes. No power conference team plays a straight home and home with a G5 program, so I think what we have now is a fair and reasonable way to run the series. I do wish the game was included in the season ticket package of both teams when we play at the Bengals stadium. I have no interest in just going to UC for a money game. They have the second longest homefield winning streak and it is a pit and they are good, nothing there for us to gain, but I like the games at the Bengals stadium and I really like the games in Oxford.

If it looks like we will be noncompetitive with UC after 2029, then it would be the time to discontinue. By the way, UC’s AD was recently quoted in the paper that UC wants to continue the series. UC has an issue with generating enough revenue from a home game to justify paying the big payouts that other teams can pay. Maybe their revenue will increase enough when they enter the Big 12 that they can afford to pay more. NW still pays for a buy game every year, and their crowd the other night was hardly enough to pay us $800,000. But they get Big Ten TV money, so they can afford it.

Chuck obviously feels very strongly about the scheduling issue and keeps bringing it up. He is more honest and open than other coaches, which I consider refreshing after listening to Treadwell for several years. I am not a fan of coachspeak. I guess if our AD wants him to stop talking about this topic, then David Saylor will address it. If it bothers you, and I know it does, then write Mr. Saylor( maybe it bothers him too, not sure about that).

No, lol, I do not want tomahawk plaques for our previous wins over UC, BUT, YES, I do want them for any future wins because they are now and have been for most of the last 15-20 years, a top 25 team in the country. That $5 million contract for Luke Fickell and the fact that he was not interested in interviewing at Michigan State 2 years ago says it all.

Where do you find the participation report?

I just learned we are Buffalo’s Homecoming opponent this Saturday.

I guessed that was the case as they are charging double the normal rate for motels close to campus.

I admire the civility and respect here. A lost quality in 2022. No matter if our opinions differ, we all still went through some of the same formative elements thanks to MU. Not something to ever discount. It brings everyone closer.

The point Chuck was trying to make in his presser was that our current schedule results in a lot of injuries early in the year because the P5 and UC games are so physical. He wants a slightly less physical OOC schedule so the players aren’t as banged up going into conference play. Also, he wants more home games early in the year.

I’m not sure how a Miami fan could be upset about his comments. Don’t we all want less injuries and more home games?

Ideally, our OOC schedule would look like this:
-1 P5 road buy game
-1 FCS home buy game
-1 G5 Home and Home series
-UC game (Home, Away, “Neutral”)

This would result in 2 home games and 2 road games almost every year. Once every 6 years we would have just 1 home game. This schedule would best set us up for long term success, but would come at a financial opportunity cost. However, one could argue that investing in the program for long term success could generate more revenue in the long run.

I would be curious what current players genuinely want in an OOC schedule. Would they prefer to play a bunch of P5 teams, accepting the physical toll? Or do they care more about MAC play and value being as healthy as possible.

To me, I care more about winning MAC championships. The OOC wins are fun, but getting to play in Detroit at the end of the year for a MAC title is more fun. But I can understand if a player would enjoy the opportunity to play against the best teams in the country

What athlete would turn down a chance to play the best competition? I can’t understand it.

That’s a delicate one. Using youth hockey as a reference, there is a system of tiering that ensures teams play against other teams of equal caliber. Kids don’t like playing in games where they either constantly crush their opponents or get crushed by them. Certain football programs have adjusted their level of play to assure competitiveness. Savannah State comes to mind as a recent case. They tried to play at the FCS level but were getting killed 84-0 and 76-3 over and over again. Their kids were getting demoralized. Two years ago they decided to move to Division II and are doing much better there. Something similar happened at the University of Idaho. Caught in an arms race to keep up with its thriving urban counterpart - Boise State - the Vandals joined the Sun Belt and eventually were expelled for being non-competitive. They played a few years as an independent FBS team but became increasingly in noncompetitive in the many travel-intensive buy games the needed to sustain an FBS program. They’ve now dropped down to FCS and rejoined the Big Sky.

Reason must play a part in level of play decisions, as well as competitive aspirations.
