ESPN+. Miami is 3-12 (1-4). BG is 10-5 (4-1). Last season BG finished 31-7 and won 4 WNIT games. Their coach left for Michigan State following the season. They hired Fred Chmiel, who was an assistant coach at #1 South Carolina the last 8 seasons. 1 starter graduated, 3 returning starters transferred to Michigan, Michigan State, and Ball State. Sr Lexi Fleming, averaging 15ppg, suffered what might be a season ending injury in December. They still have point guard Amy Valasco ( Centerville) who is averaging 13ppg. They also have 5th year 3 point ace Morgan Sharps averaging 12ppg. Sharps was an original Miami commit under Coach Duffy who never came to Oxford when she left for Marquette. She played 2 years at Xavier and this is her third year at BG, She missed big parts of the last two seasons with injuries. Erica Porter, a sub in the past, went 10 for 11 and scored 24 points vs Akron last time out. They also have a couple of post players who are Seniors who have been in the rotation in the past, and 3 talented freshmen. Guard Paige Kohler is averaging 11 ppg. Keiryn McGuff and Taya Ellis also play a lot.
BG hosted #1 South Carolina ( 4,000) and lost by 31, they also played at #4 Iowa and lost by 30 and at #15 Indiana and lost by 50. Their MAC loss was by 15 at Ball State. Their 4 MAC wins were competitive games, winning by from 3 to 12 points over some of the lesser MAC teams.
BG has an amazing women’s basketball tradition, which includes 15 MAC regular season championships and 11 MAC tournament championships and a Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament. They are 57-34 all time vs Miami and have won 2 in a row, but we did win 6 straight against them previous to that.
I haven’t watched them play this year, but under their previous coach they pressed full court the whole game, which would certainly be a problem for us. They are not as big and strong inside as the Eastern Michigan team we just played and we should find some success there. Again, they are not dominating any MAC teams, they are just winning competitive games.
