Bowling Green women at Miami Saturday at 1:00

ESPN+. Miami is 3-12 (1-4). BG is 10-5 (4-1). Last season BG finished 31-7 and won 4 WNIT games. Their coach left for Michigan State following the season. They hired Fred Chmiel, who was an assistant coach at #1 South Carolina the last 8 seasons. 1 starter graduated, 3 returning starters transferred to Michigan, Michigan State, and Ball State. Sr Lexi Fleming, averaging 15ppg, suffered what might be a season ending injury in December. They still have point guard Amy Valasco ( Centerville) who is averaging 13ppg. They also have 5th year 3 point ace Morgan Sharps averaging 12ppg. Sharps was an original Miami commit under Coach Duffy who never came to Oxford when she left for Marquette. She played 2 years at Xavier and this is her third year at BG, She missed big parts of the last two seasons with injuries. Erica Porter, a sub in the past, went 10 for 11 and scored 24 points vs Akron last time out. They also have a couple of post players who are Seniors who have been in the rotation in the past, and 3 talented freshmen. Guard Paige Kohler is averaging 11 ppg. Keiryn McGuff and Taya Ellis also play a lot.

BG hosted #1 South Carolina ( 4,000) and lost by 31, they also played at #4 Iowa and lost by 30 and at #15 Indiana and lost by 50. Their MAC loss was by 15 at Ball State. Their 4 MAC wins were competitive games, winning by from 3 to 12 points over some of the lesser MAC teams.

BG has an amazing women’s basketball tradition, which includes 15 MAC regular season championships and 11 MAC tournament championships and a Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament. They are 57-34 all time vs Miami and have won 2 in a row, but we did win 6 straight against them previous to that.

I haven’t watched them play this year, but under their previous coach they pressed full court the whole game, which would certainly be a problem for us. They are not as big and strong inside as the Eastern Michigan team we just played and we should find some success there. Again, they are not dominating any MAC teams, they are just winning competitive games.

Controlled the game from the jump. Outstanding defense all day. The bad: Katey Richason out late with an apparent ankle injury. On crutches after the game.

I think we led wire to wire, as the first two baskets of the game were 3’s by Hennessey Lu Brown. Here is the stat the team should be super proud of…Turnovers Miami 15 BG 17. Both Cori Lard and Hennessey played their best game and played 39 and 34 minutes, both probably had their season high in points, and they handled the ball well.
Also, a tribute to the tough defense that we played, we out shot BG. Miami was 40% on fga, 7 of 19 threes for 39%, and 75% from the line. BG shot 25% from the floor, 3 for 23 on threes for 13%, and 73% from the line.

Amber Tretter had just her second double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and also fouled out, Katey Richason had 10 points and 9 rebounds and she also missed the final minutes with an ankle injury. For the second game in a row Lakresha Edwards was out with a foot injury. We ended the game without those 3 and two starters with 4 fouls.

One thing I heard today watching an 11:00 BG at UB game today is that Erica Porter of BG had 16 points and 19 rebounds vs Miami and those 19 rebounds were the most by a BG player in 28 years. Incidentally UB came from behind with a 15-3 run late for an 8 point win over BG. Buffalo’s star transfer portal girl and th MAC’s leading scorer, had 36 points, which tied a Buffalo record.
