Basketball arena

Yea, you really don’t know that, but continue to make shit up so you can lay the blame at the feet of students. And quite honestly, whether or not students know that they’re paying fees to support athletics is largely irrelevant.

You seem to forget that a lot of Miami employees live and work in Oxford, not just professors but administrative staff and service employees. They are all getting the squeeze from the university because it claims “it has no money” yet it has plenty of money to pay off bond debt for a new arena.

The students, too, are getting the shaft because Miami has no money for academics (other than Farmer) and they are cutting classes and majors right and left.

Lastly the City of Oxford has to incur significant expense so Miami can live the lifestyle it and its students demand. Limited parking, a police and fire department that consumes 50+ % of the city’s budget so that it can respond to student and Miami adjacent problems. Meanwhile, Miami is not the most generous partner in this relationship. It pays zero taxes yet places demands on city services

This is not a town-gown issue it is a question of funding. If you don’t have the resources to contribute to essential services how is it that you have $250 million for a new arena? I liken it to the Arc d’ Trump but a monument to a different president.

So, to anyone who does not live here, and chooses to characterize this as a few whiny students or townies, you couldn’t be more off base.

The city of Oxford quite literally only exists because of Miami university

Ugh. Can you imagine Columbus people bitching about Ohio State.

Without Miami, Oxford would be College Corner or Rising Sun.

Maybe don’t live in a college town if you don’t want to be bothered by a college. Sorry

At least Columbus is an actual city. The city of Oxford was quite literally established for Miami university (hence the name Oxford)

Oxford and its residents are important stakeholders to Miami, but let’s not blow this out of proportion. It’s not like the university is trying to build a new outlet mall and strip club, this is a legitimate university need.

=>I guess add whiny Miami employees to the list then.

Out of curiosity, what majors have been cut? Any with significant enrollment? It’s also hard to feel sorry for faculty who have amazing benefits, pension, etc. in a low cost of living area like Oxford.

This is sooo strange to me.

Those opposed: seriously, what’s the alternative? Play in a dump until it’s condemned? Good plan!

I live in a college town. A master plan for the expansion of the football stadium and a basketball arena remodel was just released. The feedback: “It’s not enough. We need bigger and better!” I love the enthusiasm.

But in Oxford … the vocal minority is fkn bizarre.

Do you have any evidence to corroborate your claim about Farmer? It amuses me how much BS people outside FSB create in their minds to fit whatever narrative or preconception they have. But let me enlighten you: my department (part of FSB) has not received a single tenure-track line in about three years (we lost three lines in the meantime). My class sizes increased by about 25% in one year. And my raises are now dictated by the union (I could write an essay on how stupid that is).

Yet, “Miami agreed to basically split the [fire department] deficit 50/50, which was a historic achievement in terms of cities and state universities collaborating.” These are words from your friend Prytherch, the number-one anti-arena voice on campus. Miami doesn’t have to pay a single cent, yet it does contribute substantially.

We have to be the only fan board in America were 25% of the posts are anti- sports. I am not saying that all of the points are invalid- but it is just so odd to be on a fan board.

I think the cutting majors has to do more with lack of enrollment in those majors and not just a money situation. My not so scientific anecdote: I took two religion classes for the Miami plan each with about 40 people in it. I don’t think there was a single person in any of those classes that majored in religion. I enjoyed those classes, but it just seems a lot more efficient to have Miami students take Miami plan classes where some of the students are also majoring in those classes

Because the vocal minority have forgotten the basics of economics. Money has to come from somewhere. If a donor wants to fund it and it will make the school and greater area money, why complain?

JMU recently built a new basketball arena for 150mil in 2020. Since then they have won the Sun belt and a NCAA tournament game against Wisconsin AND enrollment has increased by over 1,000. When universities invest in sports the university succeeds as well. Quite frankly the anti cook field location argument doesn’t seem to be a location based argument, but an argument against a new arena in general
