The point is volleyball having their own gym to practice and play in without disrupting basketball practice. Nothing pissed off Herb Sendek more than having to worrying about scheduling practice, individual instruction, conditioning, etc. around the availability of the main floor. The volleyball only arena and two additional practice courts will alleviate this problem.
Current Miami student says the new building renderings remind her âof this decrepit placeâ. I took that to mean current Miami student not a fan of the rendering.
I understand the idea of having a dedicated practice area, but that only requires a third practice court.
Letâs say there is a basketball game on a Saturday afternoon and the visiting team wants to have a shootaround on Friday evening instead of early Saturday morning, but there is a volleyball scheduled. This takes care of that problem. It also allows the basketball coach to schedule practice when he wants to have practice on the main floor, not just when itâs available. A 1,300 seat volleyball only facility also gives the volleyball team a much better environment to play in, and would definitely be a big boost for recruiting. Everybody wins here.
Womenâs sports deserve new amenities just like the men. End of story.
For all of Lambertâs flaws (and age), that terminal design is pretty neat. I like the arena design personally.
Maybe the mega donor truly was dead set on the slant walk location?
I believe for a long time they were operating on a get the donor then built it process and the time has come that action needed to happen and they are now on a build it and try to recoup as much as possible from donors process.
To me it looks similar to the indoor football facility and it looks like an attempt to minimize the amount of brick used to lower the cost.
They may be able to push it back away from the street if the physical facilities building is relocated which I believe has also been discussed. Ability to relocate that may depend on where the new recreational fields end up.
Not a fan of the design. It is âmeh,â at best.
The initial rendering for reference. While the right side of the photo (arches and what looks like the hotel) are no longer planned, I still like this arena better.
I donât dislike the newer design but yeah it has the appearance of an airport hangar, hockey rink, or basketball âfieldhouseâ instead of arena.
I would assume the interior layout is unchanged and the portion on the right side is the volleyball arena. I believe the university wanted the hotel area on the Farmer School side and the hotel wanted it to be on the Patterson intersection side.
I think the roofline gives the initial a more modern look and makes it less boxy.
We have entered the âitâs an abominationâ phase of the project.
There should be a mandatory âsend a shot of your living roomâ for anyone who shits on the design. Just to get the source.
The new concept rendering has a âFieldhouseâ vibe with that curved roof.. Not really a fan. I have to think the architects can do better than that.
There is one chance to get this right. This building will outlast all but the youngest of us. Donât cut corners, donât go cheap. Build something that generations of Miamians will be proud of and that will elicit a âWOWâ from first time visitors.
Iâm no architect, but arenât curved roofs typically more structurally sound and better acoustically?
While it features more glass in the exterior design, this latest rendering is very much a cousin in overall shape and design to the Goggin Ice Arena which is beloved on this board. It never fails to crack me up how some react to things and what their base of comparison is.
The annex field house of 1300 seats for volleyball will be good for the basketball programs (keep volleyball separate) and volleyball. No doubt will aid the VB program in practice flexibility and recruiting. And the separate annex for VB was even part of the Millett renovation plan before that was scrapped for a new build.
For decades we pined for a cool college field house vibe instead of the old multi purpose concert hall - I like this direction - we have said for years we need 5-6k basketball field house thatâs build for basketball only.
Youâre making too much sense
