Awesome!
@YellowNumber5 Sure, ELO was playing. ![]()
We practiced football at Cook in the 70ās and before. FB lockers were in Withrow. I threw the discus in far corner of Cook by the service building. Graduated a champion in the MAC champion in track in my event and on the football team (semi all star walk on
) and eventually mens track and field. Hate to see it go but guess itās progress. I mean who needs green space at a university surrounded by 40 miles of woods, corn and beans? Kindaā gives a bit of a big city urban campus feel like someplace like UC. Great huh?
Are you The Ghost of Christmas Future?
(Asking for a friend)
Anyone remember the great by-pass that was supposed to go around Oxford? Maybe this is when they do it so the traffic can be rerouted away from the US-73 and US-27 intersection.
My first ever hour at Miami was spent on Cook Field, practicing for the halftime show at 1964 Band Day as a member of the Centerville Marching Band.
The Oxford Free Press had an article about the construction updates from the board meeting including a new rendering of the proposed arena.
Is that the first time weāve heard there will be a volleyball-specific arena separate from the main arena?
I believe coaches have complained about practice time so it makes sense
You donāt need a 1300 seat arena to practice in. Iām sympathetic to the need of a new arena even if I prefer the Spring St location, but it seems crazy to build a second arena in the same building just for volleyball.
Just coming home from Ball State, take notes from their arena. Wider seats and more leg room. For those of us taller than the usual 5ā10ā people of the world, the seats at Millett are pushed right up in front of the person in front of them. Translation, they suck. Iāve even got family and friends who are a foot shorter than me who complain about the lack of leg room in Millett
If Miami intends to do this, invest in the leg room and for the love of God, DO NOT do what UD Arena did. NO CUP HOLDERS WHERE KNEES SHOULD BE!!!
It does, the volleyball facility plus the two practice gyms will allow our three teams to all have space while keeping the main arena free for other events. Not to say itāll cost nothing, but the volleyball add-on wonāt be THAT much of an incremental cost versus the overall complex.
The first rendering had more visual appeal. This reminds me of Easternās old Quonset hut.
Really? At Miami? No. Please. EMUāabsolutely. Watched many a game there, including my son when he was a kid. But never.
If thatās supposed to be Patterson Avenue, the building is far too close to the street. Iām assuming it is because of the location of Pulley Tower.
That is an abomination.
Feels safe to say it will be millions vs adding an additional practice court, right? When the entire complex is hundreds of millions, maybe thatās not a huge addition, but still. Maybe thereās a need on campus for an additional venue sized between Hall and Millett for events? I donāt know what those would be though.
Amenā¦
The first rendering had a cool look to itā¦the most recent says āwe didnāt have the money to make it the right wayā¦so we compromised and took this.ā
Mrs Miami alum said āthat looks like a pole barn and Miami needs new architects.ā Mr Miami alum said it looks like an airport hangar. Current Miami student has seen the renderings yet.
Iām not going into site location. That is a done deal. Cook Field. I did have another thought though. Has nothing to do with the arena directly. But you know how many complain that college sports are run by 2 conferences: SEC and B10? Reading between the lines on the BoT comments, sounds like Miami is now being run by FSB and the Cleveland Clinic. Iām not going to get into the weeds of whether that is good, bad or indifferent just an observation.
I do have a question though. We heard repeatedly over the last few years of the ābig money donorsā who were going to fund a āsignificant portion of the arenaā. Well where the hell are they? Because it is clear from this article at least that there are no donors. Miami is funding this entirely. Almost all by loans or their equivalent. So were we lied to about the ādonorsā? Were there ever any donors completely on board? Were they on board and bailed? Were their overtures of āwe might donateā but no concrete commitment? What is that story?
