The Governors got off to a very poor start, losing at home by 12 to Bethel ( lower division), then went to Vanderbilt and got hammered 93-37. However, Friday night they went to Indiana State and won74-56, which puts this game in a different light. We did lose at Clarksville last year, but we lead the series 2-1.
Just looking at the Indiana State game, starters were:
5-11 FR Sa’Mya Wyatt, who had 26 points on 11 out of 15 shooting
5-5 FR Briana Rivera 9 points
5-2 SR Nariyah Simmons 2 points
5-9 Soph La"Nya Foster 11 points 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. she was their leading scorer in the first two games
5-7 SR Abby Cater 11 points and 4 rebounds
Off the bench 5-10 FR Anovia Shouls had 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists
Having watched them before, they are usually fast and athletic.
Just a comment on performance so far in the assist to turnover stat
Maya has an amazing rate of 13 assists to 2 turnovers. Two players who need to settle in and take better care of the ball are Engelina Gonzalez 6 assists and 13 turnovers and Ilse DeVries who has no assists and12 turnovers.
Both will be fine. I agree the turnovers are problematic, but they are just getting settled in. Ilse is getting her first taste of US college basketball. Trust the process. Coach Box has a plan.
Yes, that is all true. But I would say sooner, not later. Like some improvement tomorrow. Some things take a long time to show improvement, like she needs to get stronger, for example, or she needs to become a better perimeter shooter. The turnovers can be fixed or at least improved pretty quickly once the girl understands her mistakes and thinks about correcting the issue. Those two girls have a lot of talent and they both work hard and really want to get better.
Miami wins 59-52. Moves to 3-1. Ugly game. Way too many turnovers and fouls . Tretter fouled out halfway through the 4th quarter. It is clear absent foul trouble 2 players Box wants on the floor are Singer and Tretter. Singer played the entire second half. Tretter is our best player and Singer is a true point guard with a lot of international experience. Singer scored Miami’s last 7 points, all at the line. Singer needs to hit her layups though.Eng and Chandler are our next two best players . Eng creates her own shot. Wins a win.
I loved this game. This was by far the best defensive team we have faced. We had to scrap and fight and when Amber Tretter suddenly picked up her 4th and 5th fouls on the same trip down the floor with 4 minutes to go we were in real trouble. We never made another basket but got a lot of stops and had great clutch free throw shooting. I think Tamar Singer scored our last 7 points by hitting 7 consecutive free throws.
Katie Richason saved the day for us as she was the only player who was able to stop their star freshman center who had 26 points in their win over Indiana State Friday night. Maya ,Enge, Amber and Tamar all reached double digits and Núria was close.
This game was a battle and we pulled through with a strong team effort.Going forward this was something to build on.
That is correct. And played very tight D. I think some of what Tamar does is lost on the casual fan. This game was won by Miami’s defense. Especially after Tretter fouled out.
