Series of articles on campus construction over the summer including the arena, intramural fields, tearing down Williams, Hanna, Joyner, and Wells, and of course, the Democratic Socialists of America and College Democrats protesting.
Last, where it belongs, the protest by DSA of Miami over Cook Field.
The anthropology major gives his “erudite” assessment of the situation–“It’s really gonna suck to have that go just because they want, like, a basketball arena or an entertainment center … I don’t think it will be as popular as they think it’s going to be,”
It’s really upsetting that the FAM would join in protest with a partisan political group (not that my expectations of the FAM is very high)
People being upset over changes to campus isn’t new.
The bell towers still suck.
I was the President of Miami College Democrats. Since they started supporting DSA (and related groups), I sent them a letter explaining my displeasure and why I will no longer support them financially.
“The arena district will also negatively infect the environment, said Michelle Baker, president of Miami’s Audubon Society. She spoke about how the arena district will threaten both local and migratory bird species. Baker said the stadium’s windows will act as a trap for birds and will contribute to the one billion bird deaths caused by windows in the United States every year.”
SNL or The Onion could not have come up with better material.
I get why currents students are less than enthused. They’ll have to deal with the build and get zero benefit. But 5 years from now, no one will know there used to be a rec field there. Just like current students probably have no idea Goggin used to be on High Street or you could play hoops at Withrow Court.
The funeral was probably the zenith of this protest movement.
I went to hockey games at Goggin on High and played basketball all the time at Withrow. It was great. Now get the hell off my lawn!!
I’m still pissed that they tore down “Old Main”
And don’t get me started on Thobe’s Fountain.
I had classes in Van Vorhis.
Did that building have a basketball court on the 2nd floor?
Van Voorhis had an indoor track suspended on the second level above the gym floor with a flimsy one-inch pipe railing. It was freaky.
What about Tuffys?
Whoa.
Having the gymnasium on the building’s highest floor was certainly a choice.
I was not aware Miami (along with Emory U.) was known as the birthplace of collegiate intramural athletics. Cool.
It was still open my first couple of years on campus. I went in there just to see the place and tried running a couple of laps around the track. It was unnerving.
Dumb of FAM to bring up their own concerns at this event. Makes their issues look less serious by grouping it with people mad about birds or whatever.
=>An argument that Miami does not need another arena given the current one does not fill even half the seats would hold water. Basically, the cost/benefit analysis.
But fucking birds?
I did not either and I am a graduate of both schools.
Played intramurals at both schools as well!
