Defense left a lot to be desired. Free throw shooting sucked. Yet without those negatives, we don’t get Elmer’s heroics and Suder’s heroics.
Those shots earned the guys way more national attention than they’ve had the rest of the season combined. If we beat UB by 10, we probably aren’t getting the cut-in updates during ESPN’s SEC games and we certainly are not in Sportscenter’s open.
We beat CMU by 39 and SVP gave us 1:17 of time. We nearly lose to UB… and we get significantly more press.
It seems appropriate, if today is the day, that the way the MAC finally gets the recognition is by nearly losing.
The Buffalo game is going to do a lot more harm than good with holdouts. If voters are looking for a reason not to rank us, that near defeat will be more than enough justification, virality of the Elmer/Suder shots be damned.
If we’re going to get ranked, it will be because we did what a Top 25 team is supposed to do vs. CMU and that’s run them out of the building.
I think we have a better chance to be ranked today, because the buzzer beater gave us tons of publicity and highlighted our undefeated record. IMO our chances would be worse if we had beaten UB by 20. Is it logical? No. We’ll see what happens.
Not logical and not true. We’ve been garnering votes for weeks now. Hold outs are not going to be thrilled we beat a middle of the road MAC team at home.
That’s not to say we won’t sneak in the ratings. I’m just saying that Buffalo didn’t help, save for that fact that it was ultimately another win.
There’s a certain type of analyst/pollster/media that have become slaves to analytics. They’ll see KenPom #94 Miami barely scratching by #175 Buffalo at home and just confirm all priors about us. There’s nothing wrong with KenPom/Torvik/EvanMira but they are just tools to try to be a predictive measure of team’s strength. That’s all they are.
There was something DDN’s poll voter Jablonski said the other week on X when someone was questioning him why he thought a team ranked in the 80-100 range KenPom and 50s NET deserved a ranking (he’s had us ranked for weeks and up to 23): “The poll has to be different than the computers to be interesting. But voters who want to just copy KenPom aren’t wrong. That’s why there are 60-plus voters. No wrong way of doing it.” I think thats a good way to think about it. If we just want the best efficiency analytics teams in order, we have that. Let the AP poll tell the story of college hoops. Miami is part of that story right now.
We probably aren’t one of the best 25 teams in the country. I’m not sure we are a top 50 or even top 75 team. I hope we are. We won’t know until we get a chance to prove it in March. What I do know is this is maybe the most fun Miami team of all time, certainly of the last 20 years, and I think if you are a fan of college basketball and don’t think they deserve the recognition of a ranking at this point, you’re a curmudgeon. There’s a reason going 19-0 is so rare. I don’t care who you play, its hard to win that many games in a row, especially for a mid-major who doesn’t have a massive talent advantage over that many teams in D1.
There was enough carnage between 20-25 that we’ll be ranked today. It won’t take many new voters and I’ve already seen a few of them add us. We’ll be 25 IMO
It depends what the voter thinks the AP poll should be. Guys like rothstein think it should be a power ranking while some more local voters seem to think it should be the 25 most deserving
