Any new hoops Arena updates?

Haters gun’ hate…

Not meant as a diss, but anyone remember MiamiFirst by 2009 initiative, which was launched by Prez Risser, I think? What was the upshot of that… what was achieved, what was sidelined…

First in 2009 was a Garland thing, and it was both (1) impossible to achieve and (2) in my opinion detrimental to Miami.

=>Was Miami First the initiative by President Trump that included making the Canadian University of New Technology (acronym) the 51st campus?

I thought it was creating the South Hamilton Institute of Technology.

Very similar to creating the Antonin Scalia School of Law.

Garland achieved next to nothing and it’s a damn shame there is a building named after him. A port-o-john that rotates to different construction projects would have been more fitting.

Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if Bachelor were demolished and 73/Spring Street were connected into a single intersection as part of the project. Assuming there’s space on campus to relocate Bachelor, it was crappy a decade ago so if no work has been done since then it’s probably due for a renovation or replacement.

Interested in what Garland was even trying to achieve, any details? Not the first time I’ve heard that he was a dud but it was before my time.

Garland facilitated the transition from Redskins to RedHawks, which was fairly prescient 25 years ago…

Risser has a bagel named after him.

Bachelor Hall has had a tremendous amount of work done in the last two years. I doubt it is a candidate for demolition at this point.

I am a “broken record” on this subject, but I kinda like what Elon did with their relatively new Arena…mostly red brick w big glass accents at the entrance. Seats 5K IIRC.

His goal, as the name of the project suggests, was to have Miami be the #1 public university in the US News rankings by 2009. This was literally impossible: we were in the 30s or 40s when it was announced, and does anyone really think Michigan or UCLA or whomever was just going to do nothing? A lot of what he did to accomplish this was pushing faculty to focus more on the stuff that USNWR rankings prioritize, like research funding, over the stuff Miami is known for, like undergraduate instruction.

They just put a ton of money into Bachelor. It is re-opening next semester as a new home for the humanities department.

Oh the humanity!

(Sorry, had to be done)

Oof. Chasing rankings for its own sake is never a good idea, doing it with completely unrealistic targets is a recipe for failure.

Good to know on Bachelor. Sheideler was also rehabbed a year or two after Armstrong opened so I’m guessing the intersection will stay the same.

The university has simply not done a good job of informing the public as to the very real dollar amounts necessary to maintain the status quo (keeping Millett Hall pretty much as is). People don’t like change, and especially don’t like change that costs big money. Shoot, folks still moan and groan about the razing of the Oxford Water Tower when it was clearly an uneccessary, unused insurance liability and could never be used for any purpose benefitting the town. I don’t think most of them realize that Cook Field is itself a replacement for the older intramural space that was known as Bunger Field. Yager Stadium is simply a much better venue than old Miami Field and Millett Hall is a better basketball venue than Withrow Court, despite the nostalgic memories of the good times and great players that came from those venerable sites. Add to that the conception that Miami is jettisoning several academic programs and departments due to budget restrictions and dwindling enrollments and you have a recipe for much heartburn over building a deluxe athletic venue. I really think if there was greater transparency in the way the construction of this project will be paid for, there would be much less opposition. Just my $0.02

Miami has dwindling enrollments- I think we were doing well with enrollments

Not dwindling overall, just in certain majors.

As I said above, I realize architecture is up to personal taste, but I’d be quite disappointed with a building that looked like Elon’s. To me, if you are spending hundreds of millions of dollars, the building should say Wow. That building looks like something you’d find in an office park in suburbia.

I’m not totally sold on the concept art above from the presentation, but I think its closer to the right track.

I think I’m more talking about the student response who don’t really care about costs (to some extent) and don’t really care for any nostalgia millett brings either. More the fact they are so adamant at keeping cook when it is not used much by current students and is not particularly a pretty part of campus

Yeah that looks like a random suburban HS where you end up for AAU tournaments. I’m confident miami can come up with something more timeless
