Retiring or “retiring”? Regardless, 2020 was his year and UD got screwed by COVID.
No one will ever be able to convince me that there was anything more than a .000000001% chance Dayton was making the Final Four, let alone winning the Natty, in 2020. But, thanks to COVID, they get to run with the narrative that it was their year until the end of time.

Miami finished last in the MAC. But after beating 5th-seeded UB, I was irrationally confident that we would beat NIU.
What a difference 6 years can make. We were the worst team in the conference and NIU finished in 4th place.

Sean Mock has a new job as assistant basketball coach for Penny Hardaway at Memphis.

We were the 12 seed because of a disastrous start to the season, but we got better over the course of the year and were on fire over the last four games of the regular season. Then in the first round of the tournament, we went on the road and beat a Buffalo team that was one year removed from a national ranking and still had most of Nate Oats’ players. NIU was the 4 seed, but they were nowhere near the 4th best team in the conference and we had beaten them during the regular season, even before we went on the hot streak.
We 100% were going to beat NIU. No idea what would have happened after that, but even that would have been significant because it would have been our first semifinal in a decade (and we ended up not actually making a semi until 2025).
It’s easy to dismiss the Owens era now, but we had reasons for optimism at certain points. That 5-1 start with a win over GT was the first time I even could fool myself into thinking we may have a good team until 2024-25.
We almost beat UC at home. Millett was packed. That was cool and also a vision of what things could be.
I think we would have beaten NIU as well, but winning two more would have been quite the task.
