Sharing comments today from a long-time buddy and former Miami football player (Started three years with additional accolades).

"If you’ve won one game in 19 tries against a so-called rival, is it a rivalry? Miami football died between 2007 and 2013. Chuck Martin resurrected the program but never had the fire or the zeal to go beyond what is considered normal for a program that size.

And it shows right now because the famous Miami coaches now are in the NFL. Guys coming out now don’t even do college and it’s a good reason why they don’t. How would you like to deal with alumni, admins,100 guys under 23, NIL, parents… yeah I would want to go to the NFL too.

Yes Ed, we were there at a unique time and space and I don’t think Miami will ever go back. UC GAINS NOTHING by playing Miami. They’re in the big 12 and maybe they’ll pay them in five years or so. Miami right now is in the muddy middle again with their football program knowing how slow they are to modernize. Maybe they’ll go to the Patriot league or just be mediocre in the MAC."

“Coaches like Terry Hoeppner, Randy Walker, Dick Crum, Joe Novak, Bill, Mallory, BO, Woody, ARA, and all of those old school cradle of coaches guys they were psychos. They got a bunch of Tweener, (too big for D3, to small for Power4) to play way above themselves consistently, and thus Miami magic was born.”

Though those coaches also had to deal with admins, 100 players, parents, alumni, etc. the only difference, and a recent one, is NIL. But I’m sure coaches have to deal with money issues in the NFL.
Why do coaches prefer the NFL? It’s the top league.

But in this era you can get P4 guys much more easily by offering playing time (and a nice paycheck) if they’re stuck on the bench at the big school. Pre-NIL era, the benches of the big schools went deep, and players couldn’t transfer without having to sit out a year.

So I’d argue that it’s easier than ever to take a mid-major program and turn them into a winner, as it no longer requires several years of building through recruiting. If a coach is savvy enough, and utilizes all the modern scouting technology and resources that are available now, he can make a winner fast. Especially if the program has institutional and alumni financial support.

I would not put Walk or Hep into a psycho category but they certainly knew what it took to win, well beyond just during the game.

I’m certain he didn’t believe that Coaches Hep and Walker were actually “psychos.” Certainly incredibly passionate and motivating.
