It’s possible some of those seats hadn’t had a butt in them in 25 years. Like literally had not been opened. I love that hoops is making money.
They had butts in them at graduations - full to the rafters. Been to the last 3 for my kids.
We really cannot build a smaller stadium than 8k. You build it and they will come!
Shocking that Miami MBB had as many fans at Millett in the past 2 games as it had in an entire season in the lean years … and WBB had as many in 1 game as it does in a typical season!
I was thinking about Woolfork coming to us from Rutgers. They have been a highly regarded program. Ron Harper’s son went there. But I would doubt they have had a full house. The narrative is always “bigger schools draw better” but Woolfork’s first time playing in front of a home sellout might have actually happened at Miami. I don’t know that for fact but it might be possible…
Funny, I was thinking the exact same thing. On the same wave length, Yellow!
I was thinking that since this was the record, even Harper and Wally never played in front of a crowd this size at Millett, which is crazy. The best part is this was not a nationally televised game with a name brand opponent (Indiana, Purdue, Tennessee) that people came to see. The crowd came to see MIAMI. Therefore, I declare this to be not only the largest crowd in history, but the BEST crowd in MIAMI basketball history.
For those that couldn’t make it in person, this is what it looked like all day!
Rutgers seats about 8k - smallest in Big10.
Also, this is interesting article from 6 years ago about basketball arenas in D1 so we might not want to be below 8k.
3 minutes of Millett Hall Madness!!
We may not need it that large unless we can keep Steele. Coaches like him are very hard to come by for a mid major. His circumstances were unique w his Cincinnati family connections to get him here in the first place. We may be able to keep him due to that, but he may also having a burning desire to prove himself at a Power conference school.
Travis kinda got effed over by a “top program”, his brother didn’t last long at Illinois, so maybe that keeps him in Oxford longer. You can live like a king for a couple of years, or you can live like a prince forever…
One can hope! Unfortunately I am not one of those Fortune 500 CEO alums, but maybe a few
Of them can come together and throw enough $$ to make Travis want to stay in beautiful little Oxford w the good life at home in The Queen City!
His wife’s family are billionaires with a big “B”. They don’t need money what so ever. They could essentially donate money to give himself a raise lol
Let’s put aside Steele’s decision for a moment. By my count, only 3 coaches have been hired away from a MAC men’s program directly to another college without an NCAA tournament appearance in their career since the expansion to 64 (Larranaga, McCullum, and Ford, none of which went to a power conference). There have been 15 other coaches hired away over that time (including Christian twice) but they made the tourney at least once prior.
I’m confident we’ll get it done this season (and there’s no guarantee he’ll stay if it doesn’t happen) but it is worth noting. MAC coaches usually don’t get poached unless they go dancing.
=>I was just thinking about this: Miami has hosted Kentucky, Indiana (twice), UNC, Michigan, Purdue, top 10 ranked Tennessee (during Sweet 16 year), Notre Dame multiple times, multiple times of X, UC, & Dayton when those teams have been ranked.
But yesterday, against NIU, arguably the worst team in the MAC, we had our record crowd.
So our biggest crowd ever is because our fans came to see just Miami, not the opponent.
That’s incredible.
Rutgers may be a Big10 doormat but you can’t get in for under $75 most games for a resale ticket. They always sell out simply because an 8K arena is very small for the population of the area.
I went to Northwestern U vs Howard at Welsh-Ryan in Evanston over the holidays. Nice sized crowd, my ticket cost $8 on SeatGeek.
Edit: Oh, I parked on the street by Mustard’s Last Stand. Didn’t need to spend $30 on Event Parking.
