A Miami/Lee Corso Story

As told by ex-Miami lineman Dave Crowder….

(FYI…Dave, now in his mid 60s, looks like he could still line up and effectively block!)

That’s a cool story. But all I could think of was the scene in Blazing Saddles where the Governor wasn’t able to put his pen back in the holder.

I was at that game.As a person who was actively coaching both basketball and baseball at at that time I could not believe when IU went up 5 with maybe 6 minutes to go and he chose to kick the extra point and go up 6. Sure enough, behind the pounding running game featuring Kaiser Holman we drive down the field with under 30 seconds to go and scored and we kicked the extra point and won by a point. The next day I watched the Lee Corso show and he explained why he kicked the extra point instead of going for two. He still did not get it. He said he wanted to make Miami score twice to beat them. Meaning both a TD and an Extra point. Corso was a great entertainer but not. a good coach. He certainly found his perfect spot on FallSaturday morning, not in Fall afternoons.

I was also there and what I remember most is Jack Glowik absolutely going crazy on the sideline after IU scored to go up five. He was firing up the offense before they went back on the field.

Lee Corso called the 2003 MAC Championship game. That is also a rather significant Miami/Corso connection.

I loved watching Glowik. He was a beast!

Crowder joined the Miami Rugby Club after his football career. A real welcome addition to the club. He could really move for a big guy. Great guy also. I was also at that Indiana game. A great tomahawk win.

And there you have why I will never consider Chuck Martin among the all time great Miami coaches. Coach Crum, who looked like the HS math teacher I think he previously was, letting his guys know why they were there, damn the odds. What we have instead is a guy who looks like a coach and acts like the math teacher. “It’s not probable that we can possibly beat these guys”.

I too was at that game. Glowik was like a midget compared to IU’s offensive line, but he was like the Tasmanian devil the way he was in their backfield all day. That was Kaiser Holman’s coming out party, taking over for Rob Carpenter as the feature back. Great memories.

Also…We went on to beat Yale, Marshall, and UC that year to close 10-1.

A few other tidbits…Indiana beat LSU the week before the Miami game and also knocked off top-20 Minnesota later in the year.

Mark Hunter and Paul Warth (big target!) had nice years as well.

I was at the game as well. My hunting buddy, Tom Zwayer was moved from FB to LB that season and another friend, Paul Warth, started showing he would become a great TE. I believe Kirk Springs was a DB. Several guys who went on to sign in the NFL. Zwayer signed with the Patriots.

Indiana wasn’t all that bad in 1977 when we beat them. They went 4-3-1 in the B10 that year and beat LSU the week before Miami defeated them.
