For those saying “this is a kill shot” etc, relax. This is the new normal. Travis Steele and company will find new pieces. It isn’t a rebuild, but rather a reload. And will be every year. Especially for mid majors. Give the process time, meaning give the staff time to find and sign the players we can afford. You might be pleasantly surprised.
In honesty, I think the reality of this changes my entire feeling on investing in the program. It simply is not enjoyable getting behind a group of student athletes who are essentially journeymen with no true allegiance to Miami. I can’t blame them in the least for taking full advantage of something that is available to advance themselves, but that also does not mean that I need to support it. I don’t, and am truly feeling that this past season was my swan song in supporting a ridiculous system. Just not what the University or college sports in general should stand for. Sad.
3 of our top 6 (excluding Evan) minutes guys from last year played 2 years at Bellarmine, Rutgers and Bradley. I was perfect happy rooting for 31-0 laundry last year and will be happy to continue to support it.
We’ll have to agree to disagree on the difficulty of competing in football vs basketball. I think your argument is actually a better case for basketball. Two to three players can completely change the complexion of a team. In football you have to build an entire offense or defense or in today’s landscape, both every single offseason. Not to mention we have a coach who is at best non committal about the importance of winning non conference games.
But I think my other question, and I swear this is an honest question, not being antagonistic, do you think we will ever win a game in the college football playoff? Or make the college football playoff? Because just this past season our basketball team made the NCAA tournament and won a game and generated nearly unprecedented buzz for our school and and program. I think the choice between where to allocate our resources is clear, but again, respectfully agree to disagree.
I used the term kill shot which was probably overstating the case. I think we all understand the new reality which means cycling through your roster every couple years.
The reason I used that term, is unlike Byers and Perry, we don’t have anyone like Elmer on the roster and there is almost zero chance his replacement will be as good. Last year we lost Kraft, which sucked, but we knew we had Byers read to step in. We don’t have that luxury this year.
I don’t think this is insurmountable. If Elmer is our last defection, we’re still in better shape than every other team in our league, but every time you have to dip in the portal there is risk involved. Even with a staff I trust as much as ours.
I believe the odds of us getting to the round of 32 in basketball are much higher than making the football playoff, and the odds of getting to the Sweet 16 are infinitely higher than winning a road game likely against an SEC or Big 10 team in the first round of football playoff.
Those arent the same comparisons. If there was a 68 team playoff i think we could win a game or two in football. Do you think we could get to the elite 8 in basketball- I think it is about as unlikely as football
I am not arguing against basketball - I just think the national landscape is similar in level of difficulty
Also consider my counter argument of James Madison football- which lost their coach and some of their best players to Indiana and still made the football playoff 2 years later. That is my point on a football team being way deeper
Pieces are out there. We have to identify the right ones and pay them. Guys who maybe looking at college stats so far haven’t done much, but perhaps they weren’t given the opportunity/minutes or the right situation, but given the right situation could be the next Elmer. I think the next Byers is already on our roster. His name is Waltz.
It’s not apples to apples, but I think they are the most analogous in terms of “how much exposure would this give us?”. I’d equate winning a game in the main bracket to making football playoff, because just getting to the tournament wouldn’t be as big as football playoff IMO.
Of course I’m not including the boost that the undefeated regular season gave us because that’s never happening again anyway.
Right now Glenn Box has 4 players left on his roster. Let that sink in before more doom and gloom. And Glenn, like Travis, will be fine. They will identify players that fit their respective systems, pay them, and reload.
I agree. Glenn built a roster of players no one else wanted and we had our best season ever. And he did it with nothing to sell.. Imagine his pitch now after our recent success. That team could get a whole lot better.
