2026 Transfer Portal (MIAMI NEWS ONLY)

Well said. I can’t stand how much UCONN women win, but Geno speaks the truth more often than not. Same with Izzo. Both know the system is screwed up, and screwed up in their favor. However, I don’t think there is an easy way to fix this with how things are now.

The NCAA had their chance when they initially got sued, and rather than thinking ahead just tried to get through the case. From our view point as a mid-major that is especially frustrating. It seems like a promotion relegation system could do wonders for the system, but no HM would agree to such a deal. Therefore, unless sweeping institutional change occurs, it seems like we need to survive until the next realignment occurs. Should that not go well, you then need to have discussions on the group of 5/6 breaking away to do their own thing.

Blues: he’s quite correct about its negative impact on mid-majors (and lower high majors as well). It’s completely unsustainable for most, and it hard to see alumni continuing to prioritize sending their money to their college to “rent” college sports players for one year.

I blame the hawktalker who did nothing but work with Saudi blood money for the last 4 years and didn’t bring on a single soverign wealth fund to power Miami NIL.

I pitched the Miami Riyadhawks so many times…

You’ve got it exactly right. “Hey, I gave the GENERIC TEAM AT GENERIC UNIVERSITY $10K to go to GENERIC GOOD PLAYER and not only did s/he sit on the bench most games, they re-entered the portal and are going to a new school. Waste of money. Would not recommend.”

I’m seeing certain players from the Miami program entering the portal AGAIN after this season. Lotsa luck, fellas.

Well said, I think the only part you left out is even if you can match the bag, you cant match the competition playing in the MAC, especially when you cant schedule anything solid out of conference and play the Little Sisters of the Poor, so all else being equal, you will still lose players to a P4 conference despite making the effort to retain them with a competitive offer (i.e. Trick to Texas Tech). I think the best you can do is pay for a 1 and done ala Kentucky, recruit your ass off, and expect to lose them in year 2 to another school instead of the NBA.

I think your premise is correct, car dealer types (highly engaged, wealthy but not filthy rich) aren’t going to be satisfied year after year unless they’re giving to one of the few teams winning consistently. Mogul donors (less engaged, FU amounts of wealth) can bankroll select programs but they’re rare, and struggling colleges will likely lean on them to keep the institution and its academics alive over sports. If an economic downturn enters the picture that’ll make things even worse.

This whole mess is a fascinating game theory case study. The market would benefit if everyone chilled out and stopped this ridiculous arms race, but no one is able to do it on their own or has an incentive to scale down first. No big time AD keeps fans happy or gets a bonus for fiscal prudence if their main programs suck.

It’s almost like you need rules in place to protect people from themselves. Maybe there should be a governing body of some sorts?

Bluesman - good post- I certainly agree many if not most of those entering the portal are only looking for more money and the analytical factors I mention may never be considered. IF However Miami can be even somewhat competitive on the money issue I would hope Byers, Perry and any other Miami player thinking about entering the portal would consider the non monetary factors I mention. Indeed if for no other reason then by staying at Miami and through quality playing time and further developing their game they could make even more money in the portal next year. Finally for those on this site that believe it is only about the money would you recommend Byers or Perry go to Western Michigan Eastern Michigan , Northern Ill etc if those type of schools offered $ 100,000 more than Miami?

Ejt40- you obviously did not thoughtfully read my post. I am not just pissed off that Perry and Byers may leave- disappointed- yes. Read my post - it is far from moot. My point is IF Miami makes a competitive money offer they should then consider other factors.BTW are you a Miami alum and have you ever been to a Miami BB game?

Byers is currently ranked 58 on on3 and 51 on 247. So he should be anywhere from 750k-2mil. The only MAC player ranked higher on both is Leroy Blyden. Sonny is higher on 247.

Funnily enough, over 25 of the players on both lists in the top 50 are not from the P4, but I thought Mid Major basketball wasn’t good???

A bit of selection bias on the list probably, high majors are probably more likely to afford seniors (i.e. players with no more eligibility) or retain their better players if they’re capable of paying them.
