2026 Football Recruiting

Would it have been the highest rated class ever if they kept the flips?

Our highest rated class ever is like a 77 I think. Granted, that’s with an asterisk because these dumb listing services didn’t rank prior to like 2005 so we’d likely have the highest ranked classes in the MAC if you look at some of the 1970’s-2003 years

Granted these have to be taken with a grain of salt, (or a shot of whiskey) but per the updated rankings after signing day yesterday, 247Scout has Miami as the 5th ranked class in the MAC and ON3 (which is affiliated with Rivals) has us as the 4th ranked class. Toledo #1 MAC class in both. Toledo’s class per 247Scout is ranked #70 overall. ON3 has Toledo ranked #75 overall. There is little dispute that Toledo has an outstanding class and one of the highest ranked MAC recruiting classes ever. Candle recruits well. What he does with those recruits is a different story.

Chuck near the end of the presser yesterday commented that for the last minute flips we really didn’t have anyone to replace them with so we are saving the scholarships which leads me to believe we will fill holes in this class with portal people.

The flips hurt but we still have a lot of young talent coming back next year.

I counted 28 freshman or sophomores on the depth chart for the WMU game on Saturday.

7 out of the 10 O-lineman on the depth chart are freshman or sophomores.

We also have a lot of true freshman redshirting from a good class last year.

I wish we did not have the flips but it would be far worse without the portal allowing us to reload.

Who knows? Some of those guys might end up in Oxford before it is all over anyway.

Chuck made clear that he does not hold any grudges against those guys.

Some of them probably will end up playing for Miami.

Interior DL, OL, and TE seem like 3 areas we will look to the portal. And perhaps LB.

Interesting seeing how we’ve evolved in our recruiting strategy to reflect prior experiences and amplify our strengths.

A few years ago we were getting lots of high school kids from the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida. Many of them bailed on us mid-career for a number of reasons - most probably because of the distance from their friends and family. It looks like our primary target area now is within a five hour drive from Oxford - for high school recruiting. By the same token, it appears bailing is not as much of a threat with guys coming in from the portal. We have had success with quite a few of them who come from quite distant places.

The other point Chuck is selling is stability, as he mentioned the he, Brechin and Welsh have all been at Miami for twelve seasons.

Winning and a chance to actually play seem to be the other selling points.

Makes a lot of sense!

I don’t think anything has changed on the recruiting strategy.

Chuck has always gone to the 5 hour radius first with offers. If they do not fill up the class they extend out.

The only difference might be they are now getting more guys closer to home accepting offers earlier and not requiring the staff to go into GA, NC and FL.

I think Chuck said only one recruit was outside the 5 hour radius this year.

In addition, 5 of the 6 who decommitted were within 5 hours.

For career and family reasons, I’m in Chicago now and have been following the high school sports scene. The Chicago Catholic League has to be one of the top high school conferences in the Midwest and top 25 in the country; in the most recent IHSA football playoffs, the CCL won 5 of the 8 state titles. The winner of the IHSA Class 8A championship, Mount Carmel, defeated Cincinnati Moeller 43-42 earlier this year.

Additionally, Illinois as a state has only THREE D1 teams – UIUC, NIU and Northwestern, and tons of D1 talent. Plenty of Miami students are also from the CCL schools.

Chuck would be very wise to sink his meathooks into recruiting the CCL, as most of the schools are within that 5 hour bubble. Theis from Oak Park Fenwick is coming, and hopefully can convince his Jr. brother who lit up East St Louis in the 6A championship game. A Miami/CCL pipeline would be quite a nice thing to have!

Illinois has way more D1 teams than that. I think the terminology has changed but for instance Western Illinois is d1. As is Eastern and Southern. I think Butler is as well.

Yeah, that’s fair. I should have said 3 FBS schools (NIU, NW and U of I). They have SIU, EIU, WIU and Illinois State U in FCS.

Weirdly enough, Notre Dame is largely considered a Chicago school. Please don’t hate on me.

I’m largely considered an ingredient brand. We ok.

Sure. And Northwestern University is in the Northwest.

Wait what?

One of these days, I don’t know when, but Indiana University of Pennsylvania is going to play Miami of Ohio in a sporting event.

Don’t forget California University of Pennsylvania!

Maybe a doubleheader?

We’d give Miami a decent showing in basketball, and I’d watch the football game just for kicks. We probably average more students than Miami as well….
