I don’t fault the players for doing that. It’s the system. Should we blame any person who is looking to get a raise?
This site is one of proud Miamians - but more than that - a distillation of some Miamians that are very very committed to this athletic support community.
I love sports. Have, always.
But what is happening now is principally wrong. The colleges have prostituted themselves in the name of money, during a budgetary age where (for MAC schools) about 50% of revenue is derived from student fees. I find that shameful.
Student athletes have often been a rewarded “class” with tangible and semi-tangible advantage more than Glee Club or Band or other high commitment activities.
I have no problem fundamentally with a system that acknowledges revenue streams, who is involved with the motivations for that revenue and how to negotiate the a fair “compensation” for it.
HOWEVER - (and maybe I am missing something on this site) I don’t see the emphasis on the RIDICULOUS INTERSECTION of an already existing 50% budgetary shortfall, with an environment of pay for play demands of athletes to be competitive.
Pay for Play booster money, which might have gone toward regular budgetary offsets, only deepens the problem, and becomes a head scratcher for why exactly we are accepting such a budgetary position.
Oh…. Right. It helps admissions.
Well, if so, then THAT revenue should FIRST go to offsetting the student fees.
If big donors are dumb enough to subsidize their ego needs to be the king of the donation mountain for athletic teams that have marginal appeal - so be it. It’s amazing and an example of the seductive appeal of competition and fandom that OSU and LSU etc. can carry such massive budgets that are neutral. But that is not the MAC. Pay for Play tills up every single legitimate question about the role of college, the allocation of resources, the illegitimacy of $1,000 student fees, and heretofore, average 1,500 fans at home basketball games. The race to the top is going to end up a race to the bottom.
Soon, when there are players making more money than their coaches, the power to hire/fire will also shift to the players, like the NBA. Are we ready for that?
Amen. The idea of paying $1M to a single ‘student’(many of whom may not even step on campus) who will likely leave at the first opportunity for a bigger school and completely forget about Miami seems insane to me. The alternative could be funding several scholarships for real students who will remain appreciative of Miami, become future donors, and even send their own kids here.
So the football team can fire Chuck Martin? Hmmm? Allow me to think about this a little more. ![]()
Only tangentially related to us but High Point is absolutely killing it in the portal. 4 commits this weekend from real dudes. Plus they held on to their best player. Its known they have by far the most money on their league, but they must have some serious cash to throw around.
I don’t believe I criticized them at all.
Hate to call it this, but this is what this is, the portal bargain bin, and there are probably several good players to be had in this group:

The Turkish stiff from SMU at 33? LOL.
The Athletic had Elmer ranked in its top-50 players available.
guess there were no hard feelings when he was kicked off the team
Jizzle lol
The kizzle from Cincinnizzle is leaving Cliftizzle. Best of lizzle, Jizzle. Be sure to wrizzle!
Really wish we were in the NIL neighborhood to compete for guys like this. This is exactly what we need: 6’11, grabs boards, shoots pretty good for his size. Obviously he was gonna move up from GM and not down, but maybe we can find the Temu version of him.
Vyctorius Miller first team All Name.
