I wonder if there would be a carve out for hockey since the average D1 Freshman in Hockey is 21 years old.
Chad Baker-Mazara was 26 years old before separating from the USC basketball team. Meanwhile, Cooper Flagg is 19 and Wemby is 22.
=>Probably not. But Hockey gets exceptions already so who knows.
=>Interesting takeâŚ
Indiana Wesleyan? Doesnât make sense. How about reuniting with Zartman?
Religious reasons going to give the Fighting Mormons the advantage always.
Definitely just quick back of napkin math, but the numbers seem to indicate we have close to 45-50% of eligible players in the portal in D1. Puts in perspective how positive Miami only having 3 players in really is.
Here is what is to be made by the top players, which of course has a trickle down effect:
I have the feeling we are getting close to, if not already at, a bizarre inversion where you can make more money in college than the NBA. It will probably not happen for the top 5-10 type guys (10th pick is 5m a year), but rookie wage scale for the 20th pick in the draft is 3m. 30th is just under 2.3m. The rookie minimum is 1.2m. Alot of guys in college who probably wonât sniff the NBA are probably near that.
Despite the toothless rev share cap of ~20m for all sports set by the settlement, the above the cap stuff allows colleges to effectively operate with no salary cap ala MLB unlike the NBA. Unlike MLB, thereâs not even a luxury tax to try and disincentivize craziness.
That has already happened. Tyrese Proctor came back for his senior year at Duke because he was projecting somewhere between 20th and 40th in the draft, and he could make more money playing in Durham. Hunter Dickinson was in the same situation at Kansas. He was a multi-million-dollar player for the Jayhawks, but heâs on a two-way contract with a bad team (Pelicans) in the NBA.
What makes me laugh is how open and transparent everyone is (in football and basketball) about going over the rev share cap, and the clearing house thatâs supposed to actually scrutinize the NIL deals that make up the crazy over the cap money is just an afterthought.
So with more college players sticking around school for more years, will the quality of play get better? And trickle down to the NBA?
Perhaps. Iâm not finding it at my fingertips, but I saw a comment from Rick Pitino last week that he thought the quality of play in this yearâs tournament was the best it has been in years. I can appreciate that point if youâre looking at the last two weekends of the tournament. Nearly all of those Sweet Sixteen teams are effectively well-compensated teams of professionals, and many of them are 22 or 23 years old with a lot of playing experience. It probably makes the first weekend of the tournament worse; in addition to all the other disadvantages facing mid-majors, theyâre putting semi-professional teams out on the floor against fully professional teams.
Because those 22-23 year olds had their âinternshipsâ at mid majors.

Just saw on the Kentucky reddit that fans were happy that Calipari and the one and done culture left, but now they are angry that players are leaving Mark Pope after one yearâŚtoo good not to share
No Papal absolution by fans for losing players at UK.
Jamai Felt of Temple to the portal. Was at BG two years ago. Stats arenât gaudy but according to Evan Mya is a plus defender. Would be a nice Woolfolk replacement.
Hey, more PT for Reece Potter, I guess ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
