2025 MAC Coach rankings

The last two Miami seasons have changed our perception of Martin quite a bit, but I do find it funny that we too have a long and exhaustive Fire Chuck thread somewhere on MHT as well. You’d be hard pressed to find coaches with 10+ years of tenure at a single school who weren’t under significant heat at some point, though Candle definitely has less of a leash…

Edit: Nit pick losses but he wins. 6-3 vs. rival and 6-3 vs. non rival since taking over. 2-1 vs. MU. 7-2 vs. EMU. 8-1 vs. CMU. 6-3 vs. WMU. Need i say more?

Theres a lot of dumbasses in every fanbase. Maybe the ones who like the 73-40 head coach arent the dumbasses. The next best is Chuck 2 under .500.

I’m quite pleased to meet the only self-proclaimed, non-dumbass Toledo fan in existence, though, to be honest, you really had me fooled for a while.

Back to lurking.

Hey, every fanbase has its share of dumbass fans. Even here at Miami, we can’t all be as brilliant as @Theman.

Hmm… Flip Lembo and Martin and its the exact same top 5. Crazy Toledo fans.

Chuck inherited an absolute grease fire. He took over a winless team, and built the program up to prominence. 2 MAC championships, and 4 title game appearances with 6 bowl games.

Candle inherited a juggernaut, but to his credit, has maintained it. He’s had no losing seasons in his decade there, and has 2 MAC championships, and 3 title game appearances with 7 bowl games.

Both are clearly top notch coaches, so this is kind of a silly argument in my opinion.

Title game-2109, 2023 and 2024. What is the fourth one? My mind is drawing a blank.

This is an understatement, and the full context is something @UofToledofans didn’t research if he thinks the turnaround took longer than expected.

To remind others, some things Martin inherited:

  • There were two returning players that had scored multiple touchdowns (Dawan Scott and David Frazier both had 2)
  • Strength and conditioning had been replaced with jumping jacks
  • They averaged 2.7 yards per rush while primarily running the option
  • The offensive line gave up 49 sacks
  • The defense had 14 sacks
  • They only scored in 12 of 19 redzone attempts

Martin may not have a great record and he’s made his mistakes, but there’s no other coach in the MAC that I’d rather have coach my program.

We just randomly decided to change our entire “offense” a few games into the season.

After Don’t was catapulted into the sun and the roster was gutted, there were a few starters that not even Wittenberg or Urbana wanted.

Agree . Throw out the first 2.5 seasons and CM record is much better.

I messed up, it was just those 3 championship game appearances. The older I get, the worse my memory gets.

Again, Candle built the offense he inherited… Woodside, Kareem Hunt, Thompson, Dionte Johnson are all his dudes as the OC/QB coach before he took over as the HC. Heacock the DC was named HC in the building until the team revolted and then Candle was named HC before the bowl game in 2015 where Toledo knocked off ranked Temple in the Boca Bowl.

Take away 2018-2019 for Candle and whats his record if we are taking away seasons? Take away 2 years from martin… if that was two 0-12 seasons hed be 24 games better and 22 games over .500. Candle is still 23 and Martin did win a couple in year 1 and 2.

Trying to compare Candle to Martin is like comparing apples to bicycles.

Toledo has done an excellent job in maintaining their momentum from HC to HC. Pinkell->Stutz->Beckman->Campbell.

Miami’ momentum resembles the price curve of a volatile crypto currency.

There is a massive difference between Maintain and Rebuild. Both have done very well in their respective scenarios.

I don’t care what a Toledo fan posts, I scroll down to the next post.

Martin is funnier than Candle. He’s the Ted Lasso of the MAC!
