2021 Football Coaching Carousel

The Athletic says he asked for a one year extension and didn’t get it. He’s in the last year of his contract. When they refused, he went off on the administration for “undermining his program.” Not a good look for FIU!

You never know for sure. Since the MACC moved to Ford Field there have been six coaches who have won their division at least twice, with five getting hired at another job at some point (Butch Jones, Dave Doeren, Rod Carey, Dino Babers, and Lance Leipold, the lone exception being Frank Solich). Should we manage a second trip to Detroit under Chuck that’s two division titles in three seasons, getting hired away wouldn’t be the most surprising thing in the world if a handful of lower P5 head coaches get hired away and schools get desperate. Unlikely (especially if ADs do their research), but not impossible.

Just updating this thread…Jimmy Lake out at Washington, Justin Fuentes out at VPI, Dan Mullen out at Florida, Chip Lindsey out at Troy and Don Brown is back as the new HC at UMass.

Penn State extends Franklin. 10 years seems a little aggressive, but maybe that’s the new norm in the Big Ten.

It ridiculous- $7.5M for 10 years for a Big 10 winning percentage of 61% at Penn State.

These ADs are spending other peoples money so they dont care- but it hurts us in the long run- just widening the gap- soon the MAC will have head coaches leaving to be assistant special team coaches at the Big 10

What dirt did Franklin have on the AD to get that contract?

It’s a ridiculous contract, but he’s had three 11-win seasons the past six years (which the likes of Texas and Tennessee would kill for nowadays). His deal is not driven by thinking he’s the next Saban or Meyer, but more to avoid the risk that the new guy might be the next Zook or Rich Rod. They’re paying up now so they don’t have to take the plunge like USC, Florida, or P5 schools with decent coaches that will get poached this offseason.

Salaries will continue to escalate and the MAC will remain way behind, but you won’t see head coaches leave for P5 coordinator jobs outside of guys like Pete Lembo on their way out already. You don’t go to the MAC just to make money, you go to be a head coach of an FBS program instead of working for someone else.

The issue isn’t so much MAC head coaches leaving to be P5 coordinators, it’s that hardly any P5 coordinator who’s any good will leave to be a MAC head coach, which severely limits the pool of coaching talent available to us. Wisconsin isn’t even that rich of a program, yet a guy like Jim Leonhard is making about twice as much as a DC there as Chuck is making as a HC here.

I think it’s more that Franklin hired Jimmy Sexton as his agent. Penn St. gets an excellent recruiter and mediocre at best in-game coach for the next 10 years.

What they are undoubtedly getting is a huge buy out they will have to pay within the next 10 years—GUARANTEED.

More craziness: Liberty just signed an extension with Hugh Freeze through 2028 - for $4 million a season.

The C-USA made their deal with the devil to survive, now they have to deal with it. Decent chance that Liberty dominates the new conference of castoffs and FCS callups.

Yep. Liberty definitely intends to spend its way into prominence and respectability.

Good luck with the respectability

Michigan State just extended Tucker for 10 years at $95M……unbelievable how much these state schools are spending on a coach salary.

Rumor is that Fickell and Aranda have decided to stay put as well. If true, that means USC, Florida, and LSU are apparently competing for Matt Campbell and Billy Napier as only two obvious candidates.

I’d be pushing hard after either of them, with preference towards Campbell, only because he has proven he can win at two different locations. Although Iowa State has been a little disappointing this year.

After tomorrow, Mike Houston’s name might begin to be bantered about for a P5 job.

“Unbelievable” is one way to describe it. Outrageous works. No coach in America at a public university should make that kind of money. And I don’t give a damn if some rich fan pays the better part of it. Do you realize his salary will probably exceed the salaries of all the professors in their law school? And then there’s the minor matter of who or how the $500M settelment by MSU to compensate the victims of Dr. Nassar. Who’s gonna pay that? And now, U of M has a similar mess. That will be a massive settlement, all because the athletic departments were a boy’s club where anything goes.
Sorry, but things are really screwed up. And I don’t care if it’s the “going rate”. A coach making $1-2 M/yr plus all the benes is a wealthy man. Want to make more? Go coach in the NFL.
