Jason Alexander later said that Jerry Stiller always struggled to remember his lines, and as his scenes unfolded, the lines came back to him, one stutter-step at a time, resulting in deliveries like the legendary “ssssssssilver dollar collection,” and also the “uhhhhhh…phobia.” Afterwards, he’d always feel so embarrassed and mortified that he’d “messed up,” because he never intended to say the lines like that. But the whole cast and crew and audience were always bent double with laughter every time he did it. Hopefully the great Mr. Stiller knew that those accidents were extremely happy ones that elevated not only his character, but the entire show, far past the threshold of greatness.
