Who wants to read about special teams? Yeah! The offenses were fine (UNLV had 348 yards and Miami had 373) and both QBs were efficient. Neither defense was great but both managed to bend but not break too often. But this one was all about kickers, baby!
The teams traded field goals in the first. D’Shawntae Jones scored from 2 yards out early in the 2nd and UNLV tied it again when Anthony Colandrea threw a TD pass on 4th down from the 5-yards line. After Dequan Finn threw an interception, UNLV had a chance to take the lead but the Miami D stuffed the Runnin’ Rebels and Finn made up for the turnover by marching the RedHawks far enough down the field in the final 41 seconds to allow Dom Dzioban a chance to blast a 56-yard field. And, of course, he hammered it to give Miami the 13-10 halftime lead.
UNLV looked to take the lead to start the second half but the drive stalled and Kaleb Martin blocked the ensuing FG attempt. Miami responded by adding a FG of its own to bump the lead to 16-10. Unfortunately, UNLV answered back not even a minute later, when Jai’Den Thomas scored from 51 yards out and Miami entered the 4th quarter trailing by a single point.
Miami marched down the field and had a 4th and goal situation from the one. I wanted to go for it… but Virtual Chuck Martin follows the philosophy of Real Chuck Martin. Dom hit the 18-yarder to give the ‘Hawks the lead for good. UNLV tried to respond… but Caden Costa’s 32-yard attempt went wide left. Miami was able to run out the last few minutes of the game, thanks in large part to a 28-yard catch by Deion Colzie on 3rd & 7 and a big 3rd and 1 conversion by Jordan Brunson.
Finn was an extremely efficient 23/27 for 215 yards and 74 yards rushing. POTG goes to Dzioban, who was 4/4 with a long of 56 while scoring 13 of Miami’s 19 points. Miami needed all 4 of those field goals and both of UNLV’s missed field goal attempts.
