Tonight was the ultimate trap game. Playing in DeKalb on a cold Tuesday night in front of no one after we had a blowout win, they had a blowout loss and we have a big game at Kent this weekend. And for most of the game, we played as if we were going to fall into the trap, especially defensively. In the 1st half, 1st shot defense wasn’t good, we let them get into a flow offensively. We’re going to play better guards than theirs than NIU’s guards and they got whatever shot they wanted in the 1st half. In the 2nd half, 1st shot defense was much better, but our defensive rebounding was atrocious. We weren’t quick to the ball like we were the other night. NIU is one of the worst offensive rebounding teams in the country and they had 11 tonight. Yeah, we played quite a bit of zone which makes it harder to rebound, but that just means you have to be more aware of where shots are coming from and attack the rebound.

Offensively, our bench got us going tonight. Byers has found his rhythm and it’s pretty to watch. But a 2nd half sequence by Elmer gave us full control of the game in the 2nd half. He had a strong rebound, a strong drive, a block from the weak side which started a fast break that led to a trail 3 from Byers. I’m selfish in wanting more of that every game because as hot as Byers and Craft can get, Elmer can make major impacts on the game at both ends. Woolfolk had another nice game. He’s improving every night with his footwork and patience in the post.

As for the moving screens, it’s a players’ responsibility, rightly or wrongly, to adjust to the way the game is called. Of the 3 or 4 I remember called on either team, they would call any late movement by the screener, whether the screener threw a hip out, like Potter did in the 2nd half, or others in which the guard did a poor job of using the screen or didn’t let the screen get set, which causes the screener to move because he thinks he’s in the wrong spot.

But more than happy we got out of there for a win. Now we take a major step up in competition, Kent has a top 60 defense even with their loss tonight. Sullinger has had a tough year shooting, but he made 8 3s tonight. Kent will be fired up after a disappointing loss and to play us.

I had a work dinner so I just got done watching the replay without knowing the result

I cant believe we ended up covering.

The replay was great except the sound was off video by a few seconds (behind). Which meant for all 48 illegal screens I was the last to know

The officiating was unique

Niu shot lights out in the first 20 but then we clamped them

Great game Byers- Cooper and Wolfolk

I joked after WMU with Yanks that we needed to start a Brant Byers NIL fund to keep him at Miami 4 years.

I’m not sure if its still a joke anymore. We NEED to keep Byers here.

Not quite as good as Ball State’s, but I thought the NIU announcers did a good job, and were well-prepared to talk about Miami…other than the constant ā€œWillfoRkā€ mistake.

Our defense kind of sucked the first half but in the second half we were very aware of both Jones and their 3 point shooter and that was all it took.

And I’m gonna become one of them since I keep hearing it on road TV broadcasts.

I believe our esteemed pa announcer has done it.

Through MAC games, Miami has 11 offensive fouls. 8 were called in the NIU game. Woolfolk and Potter had 3 apiece. Coming into the game, Woolfolk and Potter had combined for 1.
