Payton Sparks to transfer portal

6-9 MAC FOY leaving after BSU fires James Whitford. We need a big man and we were recruiting Sparks last year. Go get him! Also, RS Sophomore 6-8 forward Mirne Thomas of Ball State entered the transfer portal. Thomas average 11 ppg last season. This is another position of need for Miami.

DICK - not gonna happen. Miami had a chance with Peyton but went with Harrison. Sparks will end up P5

While I realize this is likely true, this is such a negative outlook. He was reportedly very interested last year, maybe he still likes Miami. It would be an easy drive for family and friends to attend games. I would contact him and express our interest and let him tell us that he is not interested.

Ship sailed.

I see that we are one of 20 schools so far who has expressed interest in Sparks. Also CMU and Buffalo. It costs nothing to “kick the tires” and see if Sparks still has any interest. It is a long shot, of course, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Toledo has four players enter the portal:

The University of Toledo men’s basketball team will be active during transfer portal season.

Four Rockets have left the program in the last week — Keshaun Saunders, Mihai Carcoana, Jamere Hill, and Arnor Eythorsson — giving Tod Kowalczyk the opportunity to add depth through the transfer portal.

Saunders was UT’s sixth man during the 2021-22 season after playing sparingly to begin the year. He averaged 3.5 points and 1.4 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game. The Brampton, Ontario native’s minutes steadily declined during his three seasons at Toledo, from 23.4 minutes as a freshman to 18.4 as a sophomore and 12.5 as a junior.

The 6-foot-11 Carcoana is raw, but showed flashes of potential. The Romanian played in 32 of 34 games, averaging 2.0 points and 2.0 rebounds in 5.6 minutes.

Hill, a sophomore guard from Joliet, Ill., played 36 total minutes in nine games. Eythorsson, a freshman guard from Iceland, redshirted.

Toledo’s needs are a replacement for Carcoana and a shooting guard who’s consistent from 3-point range.

The Rockets have one incoming freshman — 6-foot-7 forward Javan Simmons, an All-Ohio honoree from Gahanna Lincoln.

There are two Freshmen big men from MAC schools who are now in the transfer portal. Moe Njie is from Centerville HS and he started both games for EMU against us and had a very productive game before fouling out in Oxford. The other guy is true freshman Nicholas Pavrette from CMU. He did not play much but his video shows a quick, athletic big man. Both of these guys would have at least 3 years of eligibility. Both are bigger and more athletic than any big men we have had for quite awhile. Njie would be ready to take over and start from day 1, Pavrette might not be quite as close but has a high ceiling.
