When was the last time Miami beat a P5 team?
Three years ago at Georgia Tech. We also lost by 1 to Cincy that same year at home.
@yanksalex and I missed our connecting flights in ATL to go to that game against Ga Tech. Ended up being the right choice. I believe tech ended up last in the ACC that year? Still a ton of fun
Would you say it was the best thing you did that week?
I could see someone hoping for one of WSU/Vermont for a 4 with 5 being reserved for being both.
The 1’s seem to come from folks who were either upset Henderson didn’t get the job or haven’t watched. It’s a good indicator of who knows ball.
Only one of us missed their connection. Jive made the right choice, though.
Word to the wise: don’t try to sit down in the dining room at Bones steakhouse without a collar on your shirt.
With the current state of college sports, it’s becoming evident that only league games matter. Chuck has certainly proved that. The OOC portion is for finding combinations and defining roles. You play who you can schedule.
Miami needs to beat someone they’re not expected to. Maybe next year. For now, beat Buffalo at home.
duly noted on GaTech–solid win even if they finished last in ACC LOL…Cincy was not P5 at that time–still in AAC. My point still stands, it’s very rare for a MAC school to beat a P5 team and to basically “expect” a win on the road, (or to be disappointed in the result) is not being realistic. The talent levels are drastically different.
Not that Vegas oddsmakers determine expectations but so far this season of Miami’s four losses–they were underdogs in all of them except for Wright St. So, we got a win at App St which was not to be expected and lost one v Wright St that in theory we shouldn’t have lost (debateable to me). 8-4 is one game better than i thought they’d be when the schedule came out. Now its on to the only part of the schedule that matters! I am optimistic of our chances in MAC play. Going to be very interesting–will likely fall short but will be in the mix for sure. Good enough to beat anyone but also could lose a couple that we probably shouldn’t depending on matchups.
I think we will win the MAC. It’s going to be Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride (Harold and Kumar go to Guantanamo for you younger folks who don’t get my reference) every single night, but my belief is strong.
I almost voted a 3, but I went with a 4, and here’s why-
Coming into this season, I saw 3 tiers of opponents:
Likely/definite wins:
Bethany, Defiance, UMES, SHU
Likely/definite losses:
Michigan, Indiana, App. St., Vermont
Toss-up:
Siena, Mercer, Air Force, WSU
We went 4-0 in the “gimmies” and stole one of the projected losses. We went 3-1 in the ones that could have gone either way.
Now, these were my pre-season thoughts. In hindsight, AF should have probably been in that first tier, and UVM in the third. Still, I’m quite happy with our OOC performance, especially given the last 15 years.
I voted 3, which is the equivalent of a “met expectations” review in the corporate world. I would’ve given a 5 for a 10-2 record and given a 4 for 9-3. Coming into the season, I would’ve been happy with 8-4. However, several of the teams on the schedule are having down years.
Losing at Vermont (NET #279, KenPom #240) is a bad loss, regardless of how good they’ve been for the past 10+ years.
Losing by double digits to Wright State (NET # 166, KenPom #173) at home isn’t a good loss.
App State (NET #226, KenPom #188) seemed like a big time win, but not looking as impressive now.
I was happy to see us stay close to IU and Michigan for 20-30 minutes and was also happy that we beat 5 bad/medicore D1 teams by double digits. The MAC is wide open this year, especially with Safford out at Kent.
I wanted to vote 3.5, but had to round up to 4.
I’d certainly like to see more consistency, but you can’t question this team’s fight and heart. And since the MAC appears to be down a bit this year, I think we can do some damage in conference play. Steele has them trending in the right direction.

After Vermont’s win over New Hampshire today, this stat is 178-31. Going on the road there and losing is no embarrassment.
I am calling it a 5, I am happy to finally see a team that is steadily getting better. I was pretty disappointed after the Wright State game, but I started believing in this team at the tournament in Florida. Coach Steele and has staff just hit home runs in the portal last Spring. Those 4 guys have given us exactly what we needed. As a squad we are still young and have recruited some talented freshmen for next year. The guys really play for each other and everyone is having fun. I think it is a 5 because the program is now moving in the right direction and we are going to be good for a long time. I think the girls are heading that way too, maybe a year away yet.
Back in the 90’s our fans made plans to attend the MAC tournament. We have finally got our fan base to realize what a big deal the MAC championship game is and people are keeping that date open and thinking about going to Detroit. I really want to get our fans to start thinking about going to Cleveland and following both teams. It can be really exciting to see our teams battling for championships with thousands of our fans there like we have had in Detroit the last couple of seasons. I now think both programs are on the right track and those 4 days in Cleveland every year can be great again.
