King Library was constructed in the space of a demolished, existing building, Clokey Hall. It was not placed there to be near Slant Walk but rather to be near the former library. And yes, there was a large student opposition to building it there as well.
Never heard that. What specifically are you referring to?
Eddie, he was talking about his dislike of Ohio’s Attorney General. In other words, “politics”. Although Phil is here to protect DICK against the facts. Phil, are you by chance in Politics?
Has it mentioned anywhere how large this arena is going to be (i.e. seats)? Won’t that also determine the size of the building. Also they keep referring to as a multi-purpose building not just a basketball arena.
I am not. I am simply laughing at you coming in to play Hall Monitor
I think 6,000 seats. They plan to include two basement practice facilities so the Arena can be open for unspecified other events.
Thank you for reminding me that La Rose is the Secretary of State, not Attorney General, I corrected that factual error in my previous post, but that article has nothing to do with my point. And since you tend to read the DDN and pay attention to politics, I doubt your honesty in stating that you did not know about that topic.
I would hope for around 7000 seats. We have had crowds that large in the last couple of years.
There is no purposeful deception or misdirection here Dick. The use of “Slant Walk” as a location or geographic description is simply a “short cut”, if you will. And it’s probably used, as opposed to the more accurate “across from Lewis Place” because it’s better known. Hell, when I initially heard “across from Lewis Place” I had to think for a moment because “Lewis Place” simply isn’t lodged in my memory like Slant Walk. I used Slant Walk thousands of time while a student. I never once set foot on the Lewis Place property.
Secondly, no one opposed to the “across from Lewis Place” location believes that Slant Walk will be directly or physically impacted. The impacts to Slant Walk will be in terms of aesthetics or impacts to the view shed, to use a term from the cultural resource management industry. Yes, impacts to a view are studied and mitigated for in a lot of public projects and project planning. My guess is, is that at this point those impacts have not been studied or even considered.
I had no idea what you were referring to since I only read the tail end of one of your posts.
Why not keep politics out of your posts? Your sports observations are typically great reads. Your biased political jargon drags you down…
And I’m gonna park where? Lewis Place’s lawn?
Of course there was a large student opposition and probably a lot of faculty and alumni opposition against the location of King Library. Because there is almost always student, faculty and alumni opposition towards major change at a college campus. When I was a student, I loved the old Goggin and opposed building the new Goggin.
But now that they are built, King Library and new Goggin are great and fit their location really well. These are tough decisions, but Miami has a track record of creating beautiful buildings that fit well into the campus.
You and I would likely park at the parking garage by the baseball stadium. I think you previously mentioned parking there for football. Very short walk.
DICK’s parking spot will be the one next to Frank LaRose’s!
I find the current student’s opinion on the site for a new Arena to be interesting, but that’s about it. They represent just a sliver of all who have passed through the campus.
Seems like 4-5,000 seats is a good number. Our best attendance years were from 1993-1999 with the 1999 team averaging around 7500. I would like to have a place that seats less than the demand. Obviously right now, we would need about a 500 seat arena to hold less than demand, but the hope would be that a new, better facility would result in a better product. No guarantee obviously.
The location across from Lewis Place seems perfect. Middle of campus, easy walk for students, and easy for alums to park uptown, grab some drinks pre and/or postgame, and walk to the arena. I’m sure there will be some sort of premium seating/club area, but if it’s designed and run by Miami, it will be terrible. Being able to walk out of Mac and Joe’s 15 minutes before tip and be in your seat in time seems perfect.
While i agree with old redskin that proximity to Mac n Joes on game day would be nice, what about the 300+ other days when nothing is happening at the arena. I much prefer saving what little green space is left on campus, and being a little inconvenienced getting to a bar a few times a year. Green space on what once was described as “the most beautiful campus ever there was” has rapidly disappeared. I hate the idea of losing more. As to student attendance, we’re offering $$ now to get them there and they’re saying no thanks. Saving a few steps is unlikely to make a difference.
Cook Field.
This site is Apolitical please.
Proximity to uptown does seem perfect for grabbing a beer before tip-off… except if you think you’ll be able to park anywhere close by and simply walk to a two-hour game on campus, be prepared to come back to a hefty parking ticket upon your return. The entire uptown area is for short-term parking and shopping only, extending many blocks in all directions. The uptown parking garage offers scant parking space on a quiet day, let alone when there’d be a sports event just down the street.
