You build it, they will come.
Back in the day intramural softball was played there also. Some phys ed classes such as softball, archery etc also.
We informally used it for a tackle football game after torrential rains, between the 2nd and 3rd floors of Reid Hall. The playing surface looked like that from the movie The Best Of Times.
I love you.
Would be funny if the ghosts were the trust funds of donors. Just sayin’
When I was there in the late 60s and early 70s it was the practice field for the football team.
Our first Saturday morning as freshmen in East Quad we were suddenly awakened by a loud BOOM BOOM BOOM. We quickly got dressed and followed the noise over to Cook Field to discover about 3000 high school band members (including drums) rehearsing for Band Day.
I also remember a carnival there🤡
That’s where our high school bands practiced every year on band day. Our buses parked on the old golf course - where the West Millett parking lot is is now.
Hellp week for my fraternity in 1986 we had a midnight game of football(before lights were installed). Twenty two pledges vs. nineteen actives and everyone was on the field. Incompltions were live balls. Fortunately there were no fatalities
Does anyone know when high school band day was discontinued at Miami or when that annual event was discontinued?
It was a decent student recruitment event.
LA Clipppers opened their new stadium last night. If you haven’t seen “The Wall” make sure you check it out. It’s their attempt to get a college atmosphere in a pro stadium. Would love to see Miami get a college atmosphere in our new college stadium.
Really? Read the Miami press release or the Journal News article linked above. I quote from the Journal News article: “And development discussions also include a scenario impacting the Oxford campus’ popular recreational area Cook Field - used annually by thousands for student intermural sports – which may be partially converted to the site of the largest, on-campus hotel in school’s history.”
Seems pretty clear to me Cook is for the hotel.
Cook Field '74/'75—football practice was there----were still practicing there when I graduated…'78/'79 I threw discus in back corner near service buildings…Bruce S moments “Glory Days!” yea-ha!!!
Yes, really.
I have read the Journal article and press release. My interpretation, and belief, is that the language does not imply what you believe it says. When it says that, “…development discussion (referring to the arena) ALSO INCLUDE a scenario…(that) Cook Field…may be PARTIALLY converted…to the site of …ON CAMPUS hotel…”
The reference to “also include” refers to the site of the new arena as the primary development of Cook “…which may be partially converted…” to the hotel, secondarily to the arena.
That’s how I read that. I also rely on other info and posts to support my interpretation.
I interpret it as saying the hotel is proposed to be on the NW corner of Cook field.
Your interpretation doesn’t make sense to me reading the press release.
The exact location of the new arena isn’t mentioned at all, just criteria. The hotel is specifically described as being on Cook Field (although not finalized), with a description of changes to the field if that was the case.
The university also recently issued a request for proposals seeking a development team to design, construct, finance, operate, and maintain a university-affiliated full-service hotel with meeting space, high-quality food and beverage service, and fitness amenities on university-owned property. Though firms have expressed interest in the northwest corner of Cook Field, a final site has not been determined. If the university were to pursue this, it would expand Cook Field’s turfed playing surface to the south in order to preserve sufficient recreation space for students.
Here’s an idea. Put the hotel, which wouldn’t be serving students in the place that Millet Hall stands…. You know the place that the students don’t currently frequent. Lol
Interesting…does the university get a cut of the hotel revenue? Seems odd they wouldn’t
As of a few years ago Cook was used for intramural football, softball, and some soccer games. Not to mention several other events on weekdays and weekends.
Homecoming bonfires, too.
Sneaking into Fischer Hall…Hearing strange sounds…Suddenly you are chased by someone…And you run as fast as you can…reaching Cook Field…And not stopping.
