That 's a negative thought. With our new Arena, they may want to stay and enjoy the fruits of their labor in putting a good program together.
I donât mean it to be negative. I would hope anyone would stay at Miami and make it a perennial power. Iâm just a realist I guess and happen to think this coach is a star. Iâm not wrong for thinking he might get poached after we get to a high level. History shows Iâm right. But, to your point, I absolutely hope they all stay. Maybe with resources and success they will.
Some have stayed. Our former volleyball coach, our current field hockey coach, Chuck Martin, Charlie Coles. Rico stayed until he wasnât wanted anymore. Really, the only coaches that I can think of who left for the reasons you are citing in the last 25 years are two softball softball coaches and Megan Duffy.
Travis Steele mentioned yesterday in his press conference that he started building a house. I would assume that means he plans on staying too
Well, I see a few more in the last recent while:
-swimming coach left for Penn State
-cross country coach went to Georgia
-at least 2-3 tennis coaches I can think of left and went to bigger
-golf coach went to MSU
Again, I hope they all stay. Just being a realist.
On our way home, my wife and I talked about the 2nd half and the adjustments and how much tougher we played.
Amusing to watch a couple of players tell coach to calm down when he was (rightfully) going after the officials.
Yep, we played tougher, but our posts are woefully weak although they gave effort. We will not get many open threes unless we have a post that causes double teams to handle them.
His (Steeleâs) wife has deep Cincinnati family connections as most here are well aware. Be nice to think we could somehow get him to agree to contract extension and stay here a few more years. Getting a fabulous new Arena built wouldnât hurt.
We had a couple of great passes that got us shots right at the rim andâwe missed them. We missed some free throws, they did not. We had at least three open 10 foot jumpers that went inâand out. They got a couple of end of clock shots to go, we did not ( I blame lack of post player threats). Both teams played hard. I believe we have the coach in place to win more of these games than we lose.
Interesting to listen to Coach Box on the postgame interview with Tim Bray. His reaction to our first 15 minutes of play is exactly what mine was watching it and is reflected in my early game comments. We were both disgusted by what we saw then. A coach has to remind himself that it is not how much basketball you know but how much basketball your team understands and can apply and execute. Those are two different things and a big key to coaching success.
At times like this you just have to remind yourself that it is a process and the teams we are losing to have built their programs piece by piece over years. We did come back from an 18 point second quarter deficit to take a one point lead which does show that this group can do it.
Toledo played only one big girl at a time and had excellent team speed everywhere else. When we switched to playing 4 guards and one big we suddenly started getting consistent stops and that adjustment turned the game around.
Toledo had over 4,000 for a Tuesday night game in January and the announcers mentioned that they are now top 30 in the nation for attendance. We have to do more to get people to our games and get them excited about these girls. They are very close to making the same kind of turn around that the men have made this yearâŚPerhaps one more productive recruiting class will get us there, or another year of development and experience for our returning players.
They had 17 more rebounds than us. Thatâs a lot of possessions we didnât get.
Yep, a great many of those were in the first half before we went with quicker as opposed to bigger. In the same subject, a great example of our post playerâs lack of understanding and physical strength occurred when one of our posts at a critical time did get a rebound but instead of violently snapping it down she held it for a fraction of a second over her head. Jump ball, their possession. They score. You have to realize the other team also wants the ball. Itâs like the last cookie on the plate, make certain your sister doesnât get it.
