I thought Eng and Katey and Tamar were especially good. I was happy to see Emily Brattom back on the floor , wearing a protective face guard, and she had an amazing 6 rebounds. I have high hopes for her turning into a future star. This win was a big step forward for this team.
Of interest, Emily Van Timmerman and her Dad were sitting behind me and I had an interesting discussion with them. Emily was one of our two commits who signed in November. She is going to enroll in December and practice with the team the rest of the year and will begin next season as a Redshirt Freshman. She is listed as 6-3 and played the last 3 years at Grand Rapids Catholic Central. They have been watching our games on ESPN+. Yesterday they had a snow day and decided to drive to Dayton to watch us play.
Her Dad told me a couple of interesting things. He said he has had all of his kids start college after Christmas and practice with the team and just get adjusted to college and learn the basketball system and Redshirt and get to play for 5 years. He also said that he played for Western Michigan in the 90’s against Wally and they got in the NCAA tournament despite losing to Miami in the game where Charlie Coles had his heart attack. I told him I was sitting 8 rows behind our bench and saw him go down. So we talked about that for awhile.

I was sitting 1 row behind Miami’s bench in the game Charlie collapsed. Will never forget that entire day (flew to the game on Kamikaze Air… AndyStef was the pilot).

It makes sense as she has not been suited up for games. Plus we have 3 SR guards in their last year of eligibility and it is difficult to find playing time for all 3 now. I never asked Coach Box and he has not commented about her in his interviews.

Yes, Jiul Gonzalez is going to redshirt this year and there is every expectation that she will also be quite effective having practiced the entire year with the team.
