Miami Tribute to Richard "DICK" Poppe

Sometime during this Saturday’s Homecoming game, Miami is going to do an on-screen tribute to “DICK”

I thought this should have a separate thread so everybody would see it!

I will be unable to attend Saturday ‘s game(my third game missed in 26 years). I hope someone is able to post the remembrance video! Dick was an extraordinary asset to the university and the athletic department!

Paging Mr. Steve Baker to the red and white courtesy phone. Hopefully the logistics work out to share that video with folks who can’t be there on Saturday.

Dick was my baseball and basketball coach at Houston High School. I also was in a fantasy baseball league with him for the past 37 seasons. He took the team to several Miami basketball games. During the “Big Red Machine” years he bought tickets to all Red doubleheaders, I think around 8. He was fond of saying he saw most of Bill Plumber’s (Johnny Bench’s backup catcher) career.

I was truly moved to learn that Dick was being honored by Miami as their “greatest fan”, although no one who knew Dick could ever dispute it. He was an encyclopedia of Miami sports knowledge and attended more games than I could imagine.
Here is a link to Dick’s obituary:

May Dick rest in peace. I know he would have loved to see the new arena.
