Showing my ignorance- what’s a “guarantee game”? Is it a game the P4 team seems guaranteed to win? That the opposing team guarantees they’ll play? Or does it mean a 1-and-done with no return trip?
Exactly–P4 team feels its an auto win, they pay the sacrificial lamb money to take the beating and no home and home series (obviously lol). Same thing MM teams like Miami do when we bring in HBC teams, non D1 teams, etc…just with much smaller payouts.
=>School A guarantees X amount of money to have school B come and play a road game in school’s A gym.
Informally, the joke is in exchange school B guarantee’s school A a dubya.
Miami hosted a few guarantee games this year such as all 3 NAIA opponents.
Here’s some more on this from today’s show:

=>Technically, a guarantee game can also be a 2 for 1 series so it is not always just 1 offs. So one school hosts 2 of the 3 games and gives a financial kicker to the team hosting the 1 game. We had that a few years back with UC.
This is different from home and home series where the home team keeps all the gate. For example, Miami got ZERO, ZILCH, NOTHING for our trip out to Air Force. It was all expense, no revenue. But in exchange, we hosted Air Force last year and kept all revenue. Air Force was smart and played a road game at Wright State as well (wonder if got housing at WPAFB???).
=>ReboundRundown, I enjoy listening to your podcast every morning in the shower.
2 weeks ago, I heard the postgame presser clip on your show of a former Miami assistant coach/now midmajor head coach. The coach told the story of a player leaving the bench during the middle of a nationally televised game to his dorm to get his inhaler. I texted said coach about that and he asked where I heard it and I responded “@ReboundRundown!”
Dang, playing at St. Mary’s would have been awesome (and incredibly tough).
Longtime lurker, but also a Miami Alum from 2010. Grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, used to walk to Saint Mary’s games(still am a fan), and I was just thinking Saint Mary’s would’ve been an awesome game, tough for sure. SMC ended up playing OU and won by 30. But that would’ve been a fun game to watch and it’s too bad that didn’t get scheduled.
Yep. Guessing it didn’t fit Miami’s schedule window before/after Air Force game.
Wonder if that means it’s a possibility for this next season. Option is out there now and Saint Mary’s has played MAC teams the last few years now with I think Akron last year, then Kent State the year before that.
This is true.. but i find it crazy that people talk about college basketball as if anyone can predict anything when 50% of the sport turns over every year
The whole premise of Miami putting together a cupcake schedule as some sort of master Machiavellian plan just falls apart if you think about it for two seconds. That whole plan premises on the fact that it would be banking on Miami going 31-0, or even somewhere close to that.
Miami has never won more than 25 games in its 120 season history. Miami hasn’t even had a 1 loss conference season in the last 50 years. There’s only been I think two 1 loss MAC teams in even the last 20 years or so. Its just absurd to think there was any plan for a season like this where you beat a bunch of patsy to fake an at-large resume.
Miami NEEDS the money from buy games. That’s how we finance our team. The MAC requires teams to have a certain amount of home games through incentives. We had to buy 3 NAIA teams because that’s all we could afford after getting no true buy games. Steele would have much rather had the 200-300k from 2 or 3 buy games to spend back in November. You just can’t plan for a 30 win season. Its totally unprecedented for the MAC and for Miami.
Or even the fighting Sendeks of Santa Clara would be quality.
I just signed up! This is big! Great reporting.
I also posted about this earlier. Good to see someone is using their brains for once in the media/social sphere. Apparently its Miami’s fault and responsibility that their “good” opponents suddenly suck this year.
This…all of this. Perfectly stated as usual @Hoosierhawk or also using “their” flawed logic, for years when we weren’t good Miami scheduled P4 teams (Indiana, Michigan, OSU just the last 2 years) and now all of a sudden when we know we will likely be even better we suddenly don’t want to schedule tougher teams?? Its just such bizarre group think out there. Then again, most of these idiots didn’t graduate from Harvard of the Midwest either LOL
=>Lost in all this is Miami still beat one conference champion (Wright St.) and one conference runner-up (Marshall) on the road in the non-conference schedule.
So there is that…
We also beat the MAC runner-up. ![]()
