The announcer also said on three separate occasions that Miami was looking for a “cheap” goal after UVA pulled the goalie. There is nothing cheap about an empty-net goal. You’ve earned the opportunity to force the opponent to pull its goalie.
You have to get over that hurdle at some point if you want to win it all.
I think I’d still take him over the incessant “of Ohio”ing last game. ![]()
Virginia was #4 ranked team in the country. 16-2 record coming in.
Northwestern is #5 with 18-1 record and defending national champs.
5th year in a row with a tournament win, but those were all in the play in round, not the round of 16.
I’d guess you all know, but this was on Virginia’s home field too. At least the next round is a neutral field game.
If I am reading the NCAA bracket correctly, we play the winner of Northwestern v. Yale.
Yes, somehow the defending national champion with only 1 loss ends up as the 5th seed. Thanks for nothing RPI.
Has to be strength of schedule. 5 of top 9 ranked field hockey teams are in ACC.
Miami to the Elite 8 for the first time ever!
Just watched the highlight video and the announcer said Miami had to make it to Virginia by 8 hour bus ride because of all the cancelled flights!
I didn’t see the match, but I followed along here. I thought we were going to get hosed again, like we did in the 2022 tournament against Northwestern. IIRC, that match went to OT and was over without any explanation of a controversial play. That said, I hope we get Northwestern in the Elite Eight and beat them 11-0.
UVA is the highest ranked team we’ve ever beat.
Also, if my math is correct, this is now the 3rd Miami team to make an elite 8. (Hockey, golf and now here we are.)
Awesome!
I just so happen to need to be in VA on Sunday, think I’ll take a little detour!
Right on. Even the Northwestern student announcers were stunned that Miami was denied the game winning goal and couldn’t explain it (and they knew the rules very well).
I watched my daughter play field hockey for 6 years and was the announcer for 3. Everyone would ask me for an explanation of various calls and I would confidently make up an answer. I was seen as the local expert and I still understand little about the game!
I would love for Miami Assistant Coach Chip Rogers to describe the rules here. He is perhaps the most knowledgeable and informative person I know–almost the author on “how to play field hockey”. In my completely uneducated opinion, FH has the most arcane set of rules in collegiate sports. They seemingly were created when the players were dainty young women needing protection from the ball and each other, rather than for the strong, stellar athletes that take the field in today’s game. No sense watching the officials on the field either because there are virtually no hand signals, only a whistle and the ball is given to the other team. Penalties are awarded, possesions denied, and even the results of video referrals are kept secret from the fans. Still, it’s fun to watch our gifted and obviously skilled athletes motor themselves up and down the field.
The only people who know the rules are from India & Pakistan
