Also blame the game plan and too many long passes (as usual) in those 2 games putting even more stress on the OL. Still, G seemed like a different player in those last two games, and not in a good way.

AGREE the OL sucked the last 2 games.

yanksalex/ Cincykid- you both are absolutely correct - terrible OL ( we have a large number of OL recruits but fair to poor results - can Patton coach? ) and terrible play calling. We have had a great number of drives killed by calling long fade routes when other options would have provided a much better chance for a first down and kept the drive alive. CM’s obsession with " chunk " pass plays and his lack of patience to develop a short pass/ run control game plan / impulse play calling are well documented. A review of our offensive national stats also support these observations. Will we score a touch down in our opener against Pitt? Recent experience in opening games would suggest no. A review of our last two games last year ( we are on a two game losing streak ) suggest we will have a great deal of trouble scoring points at all . The sad part about this story is that it never changes with CM and while we have had good MAC success our record could have been much better. No one in Oxford seems to care.

Recently, this article was posted on another forum. It featured anonymous answers from all of the Mac coaches. As soon as I read this one, however, I immediately knew it was Chuck. He loves those “chunk plays” even more than I realized; he considers them the foundation of his offensive philosophy.

**Most overrated analytic or stat?**

● “Time of possession and scoring offense. At the end of the day, it seems like the best defensive teams win. … I’ve done every statistical analysis there is. When I was a GA 34 years ago, the Vikings had done an analysis of the NFL and college over a 30-year period and they found the only stats that really matter are chunk plays and turnovers. You win the chunk-play battle, you win the turnover battle, you win. You have the most rushing yards, passing yards, etc., everything else is like 50-50.”

Interesting - if this is CM II think he is dead wrong. I have gone back and analyzed his play

calling over the last 7/9 years. There are a number of instances where we had 2/3 and short yardage needed and he called long low percentage pass routes that failed - we then punt and end up losing the game when we had a better option to get a first down and keep the drive going. Yes D is important and CM has done an overall good job on D ( except his soft coverage on opponents short routes and his failure to mix up pass coverages- he also gambles and loses on LB stunts - watch the MAC championship game last year where we gave up two long WMU runs ). If he ran more of a possession O game plan our D would not be on the field as much and be exhausted. As many coaches have said “: if your opponent does not have the ball they cannot score”. While I am sure others will debate this area the game results and national stats speak for themselves - we could have had and should have had a much better record under CM. Against good to fair competition we are ( and have been ) a bad O team.

Well, it seems that philosophy is baked into who he is as a playcaller. 34 years ago he was a GA at Minnesota St Mankato when he allegedly discovered that analysis from someone in the Vikings organization. And the GA years are the formative years for coaches.

I agree 100%. I have bitched about this what seems like forever. I have detailed my opposition to such crap play calling many times. The “book” that coaches justify such absurd calls from can be found in the fiction section.

The last thing I read from that section was called “Raise the Titanic” by a one Clive Cussler. It’s a great read. Unless you watch the made for tv movie first where Titanic is towed into New York harbor in one piece and the crowd goes wild. Then you realize the book doesn’t hold up. Maybe you’re saying Chuck’s book is like that movie?

The offensive playcalling is the one thing I gripe about every year to my friends. Too predictable and often times doesn’t make sense given down and distance.

I think it’s funny that Chuck says “I don’t have any secrets” as it relates to who is QB1, considering:

2019 - doesn’t announce starter until Brett Gabbert takes the field as a true frosh vs. Iowa.
2021 - doesn’t announce Gabbert is hurt and Mayer is starting week 1 until pre-game show goes on air.
2025 - refers to Finn, Hesson, and Gotkowski as “1A, 1B, and 1C” when doing his position preview.

The chunk plays were great when we had Gage & Gabbert. Launching the ball all over the field with mid QBs and then running up the middle on 3rd & 8 gets old to watch.

When he says no secrets, maybe he’s talking about what the team knows as opposed to media/fans? He’s almost reminded me of Belichick listing Brady as questionable every week.
