College Football Landscape Earthquake

The traditional SEC fanbase used to say " if you aren’t cheating, you’re not realing trying". Certainly Marshall follows that line.

@DICK According to Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin, cheating is now legal.

According to Lane Kiffin, cheating was always legal.

What is Army’s conference situation going forward? Are they content being independent, or do they have a future conference lined up? If the MAC were to pursue UMass, perhaps Army would be a logical partner to reach out to with them. Thereby giving the MAC 3 schools on the Eastern seaboard. That, along with adding Western Kentucky and MTSU in the south like they had planned would be a solid expansion.

Army tried conference play a decade or two ago and decided it was not good for them. If they want to get into a conference, 4 of the 5 G5 conferences ( probably not the MWC) would be fighting to get them.

I believe Army is close to be added to the AAC

Looks like the NCAA itself is considering letting a segment of deep pocket schools form what is basically a professional sports league.

Does it benefit schools like Miami to even be in the NCAA anymore? Would the NAIA be a better organization as an advocate for Miami’s interest?

That one wins the board today for wacky proposals!

So, UC finally achieves the one institutional goal that really mattered to them and, after one miserable year of getting beat up, are going to get kicked back down to the little kids’ table. Am I a bad guy for laughing my ass off over this.

Excuse my ignorance here but I don’t track your comment. Is the Big 12 not getting P5 status anymore?

Or worse – private equity. Let’s say FSU makes good on the threat to leave the ACC (although not sure who would have them), but can’t pay the $120 million exit fee. In comes JPMorgan to save the day. But JPMorgan also comes into raise the ticket prices, drop women’s soccer (who just won their fourth national title last night), and sell off other parts of FSU athletics to make up a projected loss in TV revenue.

This is a good time to jump off this train. I love Miami sports, and I went to a small FCS school, so we can root for these teams and stay happy with conference championships and unsullied regional rivalries, the only thing that remains real.

Big 12 will still get an AQ, but without Texas and OU, its got the same leverage as the ACC, which is none.

Oh! So staying in the MAC was 3d chess for us!

NCAA says it will be based on AD finances and the ability to directly compemsate players. Most of the B12, amd particularly UC isn’t remotely able to do that. I think we’re looking at the B10 and SEC with enough additional schools to get to around 44-48 for a semi-pro super league.

Thank you for this. I guess record gets Miami in then hence why people are excited about the prospect of having a chance st a great year

I have a hard time finding 20 universities that can do that today. The legal folks here can help me with this, but I believe Title IX dictates that similar opportunities must be offered to females as well. So, for each $30,000 related to a football or BB player, another $30,000 must be put aside to fund females. Conservatively, we are then talking about $30,000 * 63 * 2 = $3,780,000 a year. This is about 5% of UC’s current athletics budget.

Basically two conferences will be able to afford this: B10 and SEC. And then some outliers like UCONN (only because the want to keep Mens and Womens BB competitive with SC etc) and Notre Dame.

I think all the SEC and B1G schools will be able to do it with their new media deals. Then, the super duper minor league will inevitably bring in even more money that would allow the 10-14 new members the means to cover it.

You’re right that UC is such an outlier that they’ll never make the cut. It also seems like any school taking huge subsidies and student fees won’t be considered.

Gonna be interesting to see what conferences tell lack-luster members to F.R.O. bc they’re not one of the Big Dogs.

Mizzou, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Miss St., Vanderbilt
Northwestern, Maryland, Illinois, Rutgers, Iowa, Michigan State, IU & Purdue

… and the inevitable sh!tcanning of the Big 12 and ACC when the Bigger Dogs of those conferences move to the B1G & SEC. Tradition is EASILY thrown out the window when big money gets involved.

And this may ultimately be a good thing.
